Do higher limit players normally play horribly when playing down?

Do you think that high limit players have a tendency to play badly when sitting in a 1/2 game waiting for their 2/5, 5/10, or 10/25 seat? I've noticed a tendency for them to essentially bet all streets at the standard level for whatever game they're waiting on. Is this common? Is it just one of the many joys of playing in the Deep South?

Whenever I sit at 1/2 and some 2/5 regular sits down they seem to play like complete lagtards. They're trying to prove that they're great players. Repopping them preflop never works, but you can call 'em down pretty slim.

An interesting collorary for this is that when you first move up a level, move up 2 for like 30 minutes and then come down to your new level. This let's you not play scared at the new stake when you first move up because it's smaller than what you're 'used to'

I have seen both (many times). Some play great, (Howard Lederer, Tommy Angelo, etc). Most play bad (for whatever reasons) when stepping way down, IME. YMMV.

Best of Luck

There's a 100/200 limit player in my local room that sometimes sits in on the 10-200 spread. Max buy-in is $1000 and he knows this, but he will always ask for $10,000 and pulls out 2-3 rubberbanded wads of Benjamins.

Anyways, he does this to try and intimidate the table by implying 10-200 limit is chump change to him. He will always raise the first pot 5-6x, bet every street, and show down 73o, which miraculously turns out good. He'll the get AA , play it the same, and gets plenty of action.

I think it's like online players who normally play 1/2 and screw around .01/.02 to blow off steam.

Sometimes I think they might be advertising. When a 20/40 player sits down at a 10/20 table donking off his chips. The 10/20 players might take a shot at the 20 game thinking its filled with LAG players.

Answering this question within your post I would say yes. Myself I step down to play with friends fairly often and make it a point to adjust for the looser game but not to play poorly or spew chips. I actually find this helps my all around game enabling me to adjust better to the ocassional maniac that drops in on our regular game.

Not that I'm a high limit player but I will often play in a smaller game while I am waiting on the list. I don't know that I play "bad" but I intentionally don't really focus like I normally do. I can only concentrate for so many hours straight and I'm pretty much just playing 4/8 or 1/2 because it's more entertaining than watching tv.
