Poker player caught cheating in German casino
 

Last night a well-known player was caught cheating in a German casino located in Bad Zwischenahn. This player has had an incredible run for the past two years and now it's finally been discovered why.

Every time he would come to play, he would only play in Seat 1. If seat 1 was not available, he would not play. He was known for saying things like "I'll call anything up to 100 euros preflop" and he actually did this nearly every hand. Players were amazed time and time again when he would show up with the winner when it came to showdown.

His trick: During hands, he would remove cards from play and put them up his sleeve (no joke). Then he would have one or two cards in his sleeve that he would exchange with his hole cards to build himself a winner. He was never discovered because German casinos only count the deck twice a night and no shuffle machines are used to automatically count the deck after each hand.

He was finally caught last night after an unannounced deck count by the casino. Fearing he would get caught, he franticly tried to get the cards out of his sleeve and into the deck but his move was observed by the other players and caught on camera as well.

He has been playing the larger games in Hamburg for quite some time now and rumored to have won a high six-figure amount during that time.

Why would there be duplicate cards? He was removing cards from play and putting them up his sleeve, then putting them into play at opportune moments. Still seems very hard to pull off however, he must have been really good with his hands.

He's been doing this for two years undetected? He deserves every penny he got. Seriously though, that's amazing nobody caught him before.

You're misreading the OP as well. It says he took cards out of play, adn then put them back into play. This would not cause duplicates. So the deck was perpetually short however many cards he had up his sleeve, and since there were no automatic shufflers which count the deck, this wasn't discovered.

But to make his hand he needed to add his own cards. If he adds an ace of spades for example what is to stop one of the other players he is HU with having the original one?

If I'm missing something then my bad. But its hard to tell as the article is in german

He would only be able to put cards in play after he took them out of play. He wasn't duplicating cards, he was swapping his cards for cards he had taken off the table.

This is how it would work:

At some point, somehow, he grabs a card from the deck, either by palming it while the dealer isn't looking (he's sitting in seat 1 remember), or by mucking his hand with only one card, and keeping the other. He slips this card up his sleeve. Now, it turns out that card is the five of clubs. A few hands later, he is dealt 4/5 suited. He calls and sees a flop. The flop is Ace King 5. He switches the 4 in his hand for the 5 up his sleeve, boom, set of fives. There are no extra cards. you see how it works?

He is known as "Hassan", the article refers to him as Mr.X because they want to avoid legal issues. I don't know his last name (or that his first name is even Hassan), but everyone knows him as Hassan.

He's been barred from all casinos in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. AFAIK he's not going to be face legal troubles, though I'm not 100% sure.

He must be some sort of magician. To be able to do that and get away with for 2 years, requires a sick amount of skills. And I can't figure how the other players didn't notice, at some point he must take the cards out of his sleeve and hide the other card, and this should be so obvious.

Oh well. I guess he's good.

The German article says that poker pros there had long suspected him of working with a dealer, since his luck was so good and that they watched him closely. That makes his feat even more amazing.

i never played with him but from what i have heard he always tipped massive and payed for drinks at the table often times so besides his mad card switching skills he developed the image of a "playing for fun" type of personality which kept the other players in believe of him being a "lucky donk" i guess.

So, the dealer and/or casino had to be in on this right? It just sounds too unbelievable. If you're counting the deck on the same schedule every day, you're almost begging for cheats to try this.

Nah, not necessarily in on it. They could discourage it by randomly (or every time) have the dealer count the stub (remaining cards) as the players conclude the last round action. Dealers could also spread the players hands before they hit the muck upon player discarding same, but most lazy dealers appreciate it if the player mucks hand directly to the muck. lol

If the guy is tipping heavily then the dealers aren't going to specifically look for signs of him cheating, insofar as they are blinded by money. The same thing goes for buying rounds of drinks - if someone at the table is being friendly and buying drinks all the time, I would probably not suspect him of cheating as much as a the quiet nitty guy.

On another point, German casinos should spend more time enforcing the cheating rules and less time enforcing the dress code.
