Including sweeping the Pads. And the Pads being emotionally down and dejected and the Rockies being at an all time high. And in Denver.

now if you'll be so kind, allow me to indulge you with a stat line of my own:

peavy career in coors field:

3-3, 3.96 ERA, 1.5 whip, .281 BAA

of all parks where he's played more than 3 starts, these are his worst numbers

You know there is a lot more factors going into this game than just the fact that Peavy is pitching right? Including the fact that the Rockies and Morales beat Peavy the last time they played...

[censored] Mets. They ruined a good four-team tiebreaker!

Re: finally gonna have a tiebreaker game

Not sure what you mean by 'finally'.
We've had tie-breaker games before. 7 of them to be exact.
The most recent one being the Mets/Reds in 1999 won by Al Leiter on a 3-hitter or something.
I was on my honeymoon with my new wife but just had to catch some of this game on TV of course since it's not very often these days we Reds fans get anything to cheer for in the postseason.

The Reds lost and the marriage eventually ended in divorce. Go figure.

Padres -140, Rocks +132 on Pinnacle.

Mondogarage 09-30-2007 08:43 PM

Re: finally gonna have a tiebreaker game

Josh Fogg starts for the Rox, on normal rest.

And yeah, he's no Jake Peavy, but the Padres lineup is pretty weak now, with no Cameron and Bradley, and we just swept 'em on the road.

And Fogg hasn't lost since August 22nd. If we get 6 innings out of him, Francis can pitch 2 innings on his throw on the side day, and our bullpen is the best in the NL since the All Star break.

Yeah, the gambloors may favor San Diego, but it's kinda a sucker bet right now.

I'd put the line at Pads -108, Rock -102. It's Peavy. I mean is freaking Peavy. But there could be some truth to his Coors field numbers. The rockies have much bigger bats though.

Personal pet-peeve/nit-pick:
Your argument would have a slightly better chance of appearing credible if you didn't refer to your favorite team as "we"
Unless you play for them or are a member of the Rockies front-office or something then I don't think they should be a "we" for you.

HOWEVER, your argument still isn't that hot:
Not that I believe that the LV lines are always efficient 100% of the time or anything like that. But saying that the gamblors are playing into a suckers-bet by taking Peavy is kind of silly.

Fogg has had 2 mediocre performances among his last 3. He is far from dominating:
Sept 19 vs. LAD 5ip, 8h, 3er
Sept 14 vs. FLA 5ip, 5h, 4er, 4bb, 3k

He had a 4 game stretch from Aug 27 through Sept 14 in which he walked 14 batters in 22ip.
Although he had 0 and 3 bb's in his last 2 starts so may be a little better now.

Peavy otoh is one of the best starters in the game and has been pretty dominating in his last 4.
Combined stats are 28.1ip, 17h, 6er, 6bb, 24k's.

Yes, COL may very well win this game. But Peavy is pretty darned good and saying that SD is somehow a sucker's bet because the Pads offense is so badly depeleted or whatever is kind of silly.

People nit-picking on this is my personal pet peeve. If you are emotionally invested in something I think it is fully acceptable to use the term we. I don't use it as much with the Rockies, but with the Broncos I always refer to it as we. I feel anything I've invested time, energy, and emotions into since the day I was born is a part of me. The team is part of the way I identify myself and we is perfectly acceptable.

Re: finally gonna have a tiebreaker game

In regards to this game.. I feel the Rockies are much better 1-8. But Fogg has me extremely nervous, and I am not excited that he is pitching. The pitching battle definitely favors SD here.

skiier04 09-30-2007 09:10 PM

Re: finally gonna have a tiebreaker game

I think the Rockies will win, but as a Phillies fan, I would much rather play SD, especially if we only have to face Peavy once in the series.

Regardless for a variety of reasons I will find it hard to root against the Rockies tomorrow.... they are just so much more likable than SD.

Okay, Bob, let's nitpick. I never said Fogg was dominating. Far from it. He'd be our #5 starter if Cook, Lopez, and Hirsh hadn't gone down. And yes, I say our, because I attend quite a few games (tomorrow will be my 9th this year), buy quite a bit of merchandise, and feel quite invested in the team. If you don't like it, that's your issues, not mine.

Peavy is, naturally, the best pitcher in the NL. But the Padres were largely punchless (as a team) even before their recent injuries, the Rox bullpen is still the strongest in the NL since the break, and they only need to get 5-6 out of Fogg, tops.

So yeah, calling it a "sucker bet" was probably a bit strong. But Helton hits .375 against Peavy, Atkins hits .333, Hawpe hits .429, and Matt Holliday hits .400 against Peavy.

You still think the Rockies don't have much of a chance?

Mondogarage 09-30-2007 09:19 PM

Re: finally gonna have a tiebreaker game

For what it's worth, I would have rather seen Morales start. But every arm is available, and if you've seen Fogg's last two starts on TV, every time he *had* to make a pitch, he did.

MicroBob 09-30-2007 09:32 PM

Re: finally gonna have a tiebreaker game

I never said nor thought the Rockies didn't have much of a chance. I think they have a very good chance.
I put the Padres as something of a mild favorite in this game just because of Peavy of course which is also reflected in the LV line evidently. That isn't at all the same thing as saying they have no chance.

The Rockies barely out OPS+'ed the Padres this year.

Have any San Diego fans been complaining that Colorado only had to place against the Arizona JV squad on Sunday?
