Why? Nothing I beat will call -- and everything else is now a split. Everything else folds, bluffs or crushes me (least likely this last, but whatever). There's no draw, so "protection" is out as a reason.

Somebody tell me to bet here with a good reason, because that's my first choice usually -- but I'm rethinking some things. I can't really find one. Kx and mid-pairs are going to check unless they're aggro bluff monkeys floating that flop, but my guy is a passive type far as I know. I might get a reluctant call after they do on the river by those hands as well if turn goes chk/chk.

You say opponent is "passive enough" but that doesn't give us a lot to go on. If I think villain will bet when checked to with a worse hand (most will) then I c/c. If villain is just a passive calling station then I value bet.

If you think this will end in a split pot, you're on a "freeroll", so if you lead, you're repping a full house, so may be able to get him off a hand that is equal to yours.

Isn't AQ, AJ, A10, A9 the biggest part of villain's range? We can't be afraid of the paired eights for the purpose of betting this turn IMO.

If you're not gonna bet, then what are you gonna do?
If you plan on just calling his bets then you might just bet yourself right?

He might be holding a king, an ace or QJ, QT, JT and hoping to hit his gutshot, ...

There is a huge difference between planning on calling villain's bets and betting yourself.
