laptop in class?

do you go to a school where it is standard to have a laptop with you in class?

Not standard, not uncommon. I'd say around 5-7% of the students at SDSU use laptops in class.

Why do you ask?

From what I've seen when the course is mathy, graphy, numbery, etc. there are less laptops compared to verbal lectures in faculties like Soc Sci, and English.

(A school issued laptop is required as it's a 'Mobile Learning Environment')

I think like 95% of law students use laptops. I had one professor last year who didn't allow them because he thinks they are a distraction. He is right.

By my estimates, on average >90% have an IM open, and 40-50% are doing something other than following along with the prof.

One of my prof's has actually resorted to requesting that laptops be closed during a certain part of each class.

I'm in class right now....and on 2+2, checking e-mail, playing poker, paying bills, etc. I'm pretty [censored] in this class, but I keep thinking "I'll start paying attention next class"

I waited a few weeks before deciding if I wanted to bring my laptop to a particular class.
