how many hands do you need to play in omaha to get a good idea of your winrate?

Probably 20K hands to get the same kind of idea you'd get from 10K hands in Hold'em. PLO's pretty volatile.

it's sort of irrelevant because by the time you've played that many hands the nature of the games you're playing in will have changed.

to put in english, I have over half a million hands in various databases but would be very hard pressed to tell you what my expected winrate would be in any game I sit in, except to say that it would be a positive number more often then not.

i played 65k hands or so before I went through a 20BI downswing.

after 100k hands your observed winrate may be off by as much as 4bb/100 from variance alone, and your game and game conditions may have changed, making it even less reliable. you may be able to use something like pokerEV to cut down on the uncertainty a little, but regardless you're going to have to estimate.

Wow, R U 4 sriuz? 4BB/100 difference seems A LOT after 100k hands.

Yeah actually.. after my first 100k hands this year I was 7.5ptbb/100 i have 215k hands in now and I about 3 ptbb/100... sooo in actuality after 100k hands my winrate was off by 9 bb/100... sick sick game.

Damn, one of the reasons I was interested in PLO was it was supposedly lower variance than limit holdem.

What are the lower variance forms of poker? And no, please don't tell me to search. A search here on "low variance poker" or some such is what led me to PLO in the first place.

My stomach would gladly take lower overall bb/100 for lower variance...

Try split pot poker games to lower variance.
