NFL bans alcohol from team funtions

seattle pi article

[ QUOTE ]
NEW YORK -- NFL clubs may no longer serve alcohol at team functions or on buses or flights, extending a ban that until now applied only in locker rooms.

NFL owners and executives were told Thursday by commissioner Roger Goodell that the rule pertains not only to players but to owners, coaches and guests

Whatta joke.

Sorry sir, er, Mr Billionare, but you can't drink on your private plane with your team while celebrating your teams win.

I'm fairly indifferent, but if it is an official team function, then that can be seen as part of one's job, correct?

Now, like I said, I could care less about whether or not they drink on the plane, but I don't think there's anything wrong with a policy that says "NFL players, coaches, etc. cannot drink while on the job." As far as "guests", I don't know how often guests of players or coaches are on team flights, but who knows?

There's PLENTY of time for players and coaches to go and tip a few back. The NFL is undergoing a serious public relations nightmare recently with Pacman Jones, Mike Vick (allegedly), and 50% of the Cincinnati Bengals roster. After what happened with Josh Hancock (albeit an entirely different sport and not part of a team function), the last thing they'd want is something happening with one of their players after a team function.

No alcohol at team banquets? No beer at team-sponsored charity golf tournaments? Oh well, I guess they'll all have to get drunk in the car on the way to the event.
