i tend not to buy books until the first week of classes is over to see which books will be necessary to buy

If I had bought from the school's bookstore it would have been ~$750.

Since I used other sources I spent less than $400.

I don't buy books til after the first week either. I decided I only needed one book and split that with a friend so $40
beat I got a mandatory 7:45 every morning that takes attendance
