Cant connect laptop to modem

Ok here was my old setup... Qwest dsl modem connected to a d-link wirelss router. Something happened to my d-link wireless modem and it isnt working. When it has power to it all the lights on the front light up and the wireless isnt working. Im trying to just run an ethernet cord from the qwest modem to my laptop but its not connecting. Ive tried unplugging the modem and everything and it still wont connect. Is there something i have to do on my laptop or to the modem? Thanks.

I'm not following what you're trying to do; or exactly what the problem was. You DO NOT want to plug-in your laptop directly to your modem because it exposes you directly to the interwebs. That is bad. What was wrong with the router?

It gets confusing with the terminology.

In the UK, what you caller a router we call a modem and we have a thing called a filter which is sometimes called a router.
