Golf in Vegas
 

I'm heading out to Vegas for a week or so, and would like to play some golf. but I keep hearing the courses are way overpriced, compared to most areas in the country (I live in Boston).

anybody have any recs for places close to the strip? I won't have a car.

has anybody played at the Callaway 9 hole course? this could be a good cheap option to go out and practice 80% of my game.

fyi, I'm at best a middling player. my best 18 hole score is 97, best 9 hole score is 45ish. like lots of people I hit great balls - some of the time.

From what i recall, all the courses (18 holes) close to the strip are real expensive. Ive called several and they were 150-250 range. The courses about 15-30 minutes from the strip, ie., north las vegas are significantly cheaper. TPC at the canyons has a twilight that is reasonable, that badlands is a decent price, angel park is also pretty moderately priced. Those are really the only ones im familiar with.

yikes, yeah. that is basically as expensive as any course (public or private) in New England. in fact I'm not sure if any cost as much as $150.

When are you going? I'm going to be there June 30- July 5th and would like to play.

There are some places that are reasonable and if you are willing to play at twilight, you can get decent prices at the expensive courses.

Last time in Vegas we played a place called The Legacy, which was nice and not expensive. Angel Park is reasonable I think.

I played the Callaway course once. It was decent. Angel Park has a good 12 hold par 3 course.

I've played Angel Park and Paiute, and thought they were OK, nothing special.

If you guys can handle playing when it's ripping hot, I liked Badlands (close to Angel Park, right next to Suncoast). Also played the Lexington course at Revere, which was pretty nice. Both of these places will be 55-70 during your time frame because of the heat. Badlands for sure has those humidifier rigs on the golf carts, so that should mitigate the heat a very little bit.

Last I remember, you can play the Callaway place at night, which would be a nice novelty, if nothing else. Sometimes it's right in the flight corridor, and you feel like you can hit an airplane with an L-wedge. [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

Callaway was atrociously expensive for out of staters, IIRC--something like $40 for a 9 hole par 3 that takes an hour to play. And this was when it opened 5-8 years ago.

I agree with what's been said. Angel Park is decent value. Badlands may be a little tough for you (target golf on every hole).

Up northeast in Mesquite and St. George are phenominal golf courses--Wolf Creek in Mesquite is my favorite course in the whole world. http://www.golfwolfcreek.com/topmenu...&page=9536 Under $85 in the summer out there because it's an hour from civilization (well, Mesquite has 5 casinos, but it's no Vegas). Those courses would be $200+ if close to the strip. Very hard though.

Since you shoot about 110 I would stick to the more traditional courses, though--Angel Park, Legacy, etc.

Aside: Wolf Creek has these "Challenger tees" that are usually up the sides of cliffs you have to climb, have 280 carries to fairways on a couple holes, and are rated like 75.0/150. They don't put the tees out at all to discourage people from playing them. Does anyone else (besides me) play them even when the starter tells them not to? I love them... I only think I've broken 80 on them once in like 8 tries though [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

knicknut, checked out the website for that course. Looks pretty awesome but I'm annoyed the site doesn't have a hole-by-hole breakdown or map, or scans of the yardage book. I don't get all why public, daily fee courses aren't doing that by now. If it's as nice as you say they need to put that out there.

Also, since the second set of tees is like 500+ yards shorter than the tips, I'm tipping out every time. 6400 yards at high desert is probably more like 6000 in most other places, where the elevation is lower and the air more himid. Too short for single digit handicappers IMO, unless the course is super tight.
