Yeah, I mean... got-damn.

It is *very* rare that I do the audio equivalent of a double take. Jaw-dropping. It's like getting a cold bucket of water thrown in your face. Like the other music you've been listening to has been sleepwalking, and this is the wake-up call.

The last time I got this excited by a new sound was The Go! Team's record... this isn't as much a "new sound" as it is a complete re-invention of an established sound... and it's invigorated by new ideas about instrumentation, composition, dynamic changes, etc.

And only two listens so far... I'll need to pay attention to the lyrics next time, because I haven't even begun to analyze those.

Has everybody drank of the Decemberists kool-aid? My ex-roommate used to cane Picaresque daily and I hated pretty much every song on there.

Writing Eli The Barrow Boy is a crime best prosecuted in the Hague.

FWIW, I love a lot of pussy indie hipster music, too, like Secret Stars, Destroyer, Math & Physics, Ted Leo, etc.

Crzylgs -- what I'm saying is that this is a MAJOR leap on the band's part. It's like going from Pablo Honey to OK Computer, totally skipping The Bends.

If you liked the band before this, you'll love this album. But if you *didn't* like the band before this, there's still a good chance this album will impress you -- because it's that much of an improvement... it's mature, ambitious, and completely surprising.
