Even though the Mets choked like Mama Cass on a ham sandwich, this quote still puts me on mega-triple life tilt.

Why would that bother you if you're a Phillies fan?

I read that and get the same sense of glee that I get from finding $20 in a jacket I haven't worn in a while.

Here's a telling quote from the ESPN article;

[ QUOTE ]
"J.C. had an outstanding three months for us this year, particularly down the stretch," Amaro said.

[/ QUOTE ]

Evidently three good months is worth a 3yr/$12MM deal. It's probably only a slight overpay in terms of dollars, but way too much in terms of years.

You could remove a few players with which the Phillies don't make the playoffs.

Romero was one of them. He was there every time they called him in, which with their starting pitching was often.

I think the deal is fine. The money isn't huge, and realistically I don't see him signing a deal for less than 3 years. If he sucks the last year at least it's 4 instead of the 8 Eaton gets or whatever the hell they paid Garcia for that abomination

I think the real worry is that he sucks all three years. I orginally thought he was alot younger than he is. In fact he's been around since 1999 and has never been stellar (except 2002 and this year). Given his age there is no reason to believe he will continue to be a top reliever and every reason to believe he will probably start to decline; it won't be pretty.

Yea, I have a bad feeling about him being around. I would rather have Aaron Fultz.

meh, I'll take Romero just because he's 3 years younger and he has more upside. Other than that they shoulda spent their money on someone like Cordero or Hiruki (ok I admit the major reason I want Hiroki is that lots of hot asian chicks showed up to watch Iguchi and I want them to come back).

Anyway, Gillick stated that he had about 12mil left to spend this offseason. I'm not sure if this factored in Romero or not; and assuming he was being 100% truthful with that number, what would you all spend it on?

None of the 3rd basemen available seem very reasonable to me (ie they're all probably going to decline a bit) Most reasonable to me might be to take on salary for the O's with a one year rental of Melvin Mora. In the OF I suggested going for Torii Hunter, but that would take closer to the 20mil I postulated they had available. Maybe another reliever, Gagne or Cordero???

How can that be, we only have to spend an extra 9 mil in salaries this year right? We should have much more than 12 it sounds like to me... if they are trying to get the 100 mil mark that is.

Bremen 11-12-2007 02:47 PM

Re: Phillies NL EAST CHAMPS offseason thread!

Either the earlier reports that payroll would hit the 100mil mark were incorrect or he is lowballing for some reason. He might be lowering expectations in case he doesn't get a big deal done (or make himself look better when he does), or maybe he's underrepresenting how much cash he has available as a bargaining ploy with FAs.

Looking at the quite pathetic list of FA; does anyone have any hope of the Phils doing anything note worthy this offseason? Are there any trades that are even a remote possibility? We could probably take on someones bad contract, but the only thing we'd really want is pitching and there is no such thing as an overpaid pitcher.

JIMMY ROLLINS: 2007 NL MVP. BACK TO BACK BABY

woo its good having 3 perrenial mvp candidates in your infield. Now all we need is some sort of pennant or at least another playoff appearence (or maybe even a playoff win omg!) and i'll be happy (sort of).

I agree w/ you bremen, no FA's out there. The only worthy thing the phils can do now is sign rowand to some kind of deal. He's worth it. I really don't care how much they give him, I think he needs to be a part of the phillies in the next few years. I think the rotation will be fine this year with myers back and maybe Carrasco getting called up by september (savory too maybe?). Who knows.

Did anybody see that the Phillies made a 4 year offer to Lowell who turned it down? That would have been nice. Someone told me it was on the AM jump on espn.com

It doesn't give much details, but does say the Phillies offered more (although probably less per year). I can't really blame him, as his skills decline the BOSOX fans will be kinder to their hero. Also better chance for more rings in Boston

The Phillies have apparently acquired OF Chris Snelling from TB for cash. Seems to be a very injury prone Aussie who thinks Yoda is responsible for his baseball abilities!!??? I like this guy already

Ugh, I turned it on just in time to hear them all agree that moneyball and advanced statistics are overrated and imply that Bill James' numbers are biased since he works for the Sox and Youkillis had the highest range factor among first basemen, after which I promptly changed the channel.

What else can the phillies do this year? The current team will compete, but they are definitely not much improved over last year. So ill take another NL East title plz.

Capuano and Vargas are about to get non tendered, so those are two more names to throw into the mix.

I don't think anyone is "on the verge" although you never know. One thing is for certain, the Phillies are not among the favorites.

meh, I'll take Wolf over both of them. Although Capuano might be a better dollar value after the horrible season he just had. Which might mean more left over for a RP/3B/OF.

Capuano seems to be close to kyle lohse if maybe a little more durable. So whats the deal on lohse? does he want too much money, or to go to another team? I wouldn't mind just locking him up to a 2 or 3 year deal or something like that.

Misinformation-I though I edited out, but Capuano and Vargas are NOT going to be nontendered. I misread the original article. They could be had in trades, but I doubt Philly has the goods.

Lohse is going to be a pretty bad investment in the winter of 07.

Zach Belden 11-29-2007 02:42 PM

Re: Phillies NL EAST CHAMPS offseason thread!

Yea lohse would be a horrible investment for a 5 year deal. Hard to believe anyone would go for that.. the guy hasn't proven to be THAT durable and is at best a 3rd slot starter. I'd take a 2-3 year deal in the 16-20 mil range tho.

Obviously no one has given him 5 years; yet. Boras may be overselling at five, he should have no trouble getting four. There is a very small chance that Gillick gives a four year deal.

It looks like Lohse is going to be too pricey. I would rather pick up somebody like Wolf on the cheap.

Wolf is apparently going to the Padres, grrrr arrrg! I doubt Kuroda is coming here either. I'm left wondering if maybe offering Garcia arbitration might have been a good idea...
