Advantage poker: Boris Becker joins PokerStars team

After all his time on the court, you might think Boris Becker would have had enough aces to satisfy him for life. It appears that is not the case. PokerStars announced today that the winner of six grand slam tennis events has joined its stable of players.

Becker is known worldwide as a champion on the tennis court. Now, after years of playing poker recreationally, he is setting out to get as good on the poker felt as he was on the court.

“When I was still playing professional tennis, I started learning to play poker casually in-between games because it helped me to improve my concentration,” Becker said. “Now I want to develop my poker skills and challenge myself to become really competitive at the highest levels in poker.”

Though it would take a true student of tennis to understand the similarities in the game, Becker has already noted the strategy, psychology, and decision-making under pressure that is required of both endeavors. He has already embarked on a poker training program that will tap his champion's drive. He already has his eye on some of the biggest poker tournaments in the world.

Becker says we can expect to see him first on the European Poker Tour. He's planning to play at EPT Dortmund in his native Germany and the EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo next Spring. The PokerStars blog will have all the news from Becker’s experience on the felt as it happens, plus information on future events he will be taking part in, so keep checking back here for updates.

Congratulations to Boris Becker and PokerStars on a relationship that was almost certainly...love at first sight.

Who the hell is Jepson?

He won an EPT event, which I guess qualified him for getting to be a part of team FTP. This would be better if Jepson was actually German, but he's Danish.

Becker's eyes look creepy in the first photo.
I saw him play at a tournement in Cincinnati many years ago...but he was playing tennis, not poker.

Re: Boris Becker joins PokerStars team

Well he is still huge in germany. Except for Michael Schumacher, probably still the biggest name.
When he turned 40 a few days ago it seemed to be a big deal and he was certainly on all the german tv channels that I*m unfortunate to have on my tv.

I'm sure if anyone can bring even more germans to pokerstars, it's Boris.
Even in other european countries, the Uk too where he has been Wimbledon commentator, he is still a bigger name than I think 99 percent of active tennis players and certainly bigger than any poker player.

So like someone said, a huge signing that can't have been cheap, unless Boris really loves poker I guess.
I know he has had huge deals in the past with big sponsors like Mercedes.

This is incredible news, I've been on the online poker sidelines for the past few years waiting to see which site would sign up Boris Becker. Now that Stars has signed him, I'm going to open an account there. I need help with rakeback, funding options, etc. What would be a good place on this forum for this? Thanks and cya at the tables!!

not sure as to which effects this will have on the german poker market, but this is HUGE when it comes to getting tons of press. after all, he still is one of very few true german sports legends - he basically CREATED tennis in germany and has been in a love/hate relationship with just about every german ever since. i mean, he dropped tennis like 10 years ago and still has cover stories about once a week or so (alas re: his murky private life ).

[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] pokerstars for making this deal. becker is known for making good choices concering his testemonials - he helped aol take off in germany some years ago. let´s hope there´s more to come.

I did a survey for Stars in the summertime for FPPs, and there were questions about how excited you'd be to play against celebrities "such as Boris Becker" on Stars in the future.

I thought it was a joke, guess not......

This is good news. It will bring in more new players. New players = bad players. Bad players = good for you.

I expect Boris Becker to play well. He's competitive and also likes to play chess.

lolololol...can't believe it...he will be crushed...can't wait to see some handhistories with him as villain....this will be fun..he really is among the most famous people here in germany, perhaps place 2 or 3 but surely in the top 5 but he is not known for being very intelligent (and thats kind of an understatement)...dont know if this is known internationally, but i can remember that some years ago a pregnant women accused him of being the father of her unborn child and he meant it was sperm-theft...lolololol
and some weeks later, after he made himself to a joke with that comment which was press-released he said something like
i can't be the father, i only slept with her for some secounds...lololololol

I remember filling in some online questionnaire that popped up when i started the PS client. It was about Boris Becker and contained questions about if you know who he is and whether or not it would be a good idea to sign him for Team Pokerstars. Apparently the PS population thought it is a good idea (and i agree). The questionnaire was probably only offered to Euros.

Well he is my all time favorite player and as a kid I spent countless of hours watching and rooting for him.

So many great matches. Won and lost.

But unlike some other players, like Kafelnikov, I'd never heard of him playing poker though and I'm definitely not expecting that we'll see him online at all.

More likely only at EPT events in Germany and the big one in Monte Carlo.

Re: Boris Becker joins PokerStars team

Boris was the hero of my childhood, I got goose bumps watching him fight in wimbledon. He was such an amazing player, always gave 100%, showed his emotions and was very likable. In terms of charisma, todays tennis players are nothing compared to him. In Germany he is still like in every TV show, he loves to go to big events and parties. So as an advertiser he is a very good choice. His contract has to be very high, he is a living legend.
