MLB Pitchers: First Half
 

Independent of ballpark factors and team defense, these are the pitchers who have given their team the best chance to win the highest percentage of games in which they’ve started. These are pitchers with an arbitrary minimum of 16 GS + a minimum of 100 IP.

17) James Shields
18) Johan Santana
19) Jeff Francis
20) Daisuke Matzusaka
21) CC Sabathia
22) Noah Lowry
23) Gil Meche
24) Aaron Harang
25) Josh Beckett
26) Ben Sheets
27) Matt Cain
28) Fausto Carmona
29) Tom Gorzellany
30) Ted Lilly

Notable exclusions include: Perez, Mitre, Guthrie, Wang, James, & King Felix. Hopefully they start enough games for an evaluation at season’s end.

Overall value may be slightly different when considering total starts; for instance, Erik Bedard narrowly missed the top 30, but has started 19 games (Oswalt leads all with 20), whereas Escobar and Beckett are on the list, but have only started 16 games. That is to say, of course, that the latter two may not rank as high as Bedard after 19 starts.

I was wondering about that. But he said " these are the pitchers who have given their team the best chance to win the highest percentage of games in which they’ve started" and Hamels has had a couple bad starts... I'd like to know the exact criteria though.

This seems a little screwy.

Doesn't seem like one guy should be #7 on the list, and one guy should be off the list completely.

Hamels narrowly missed the list. He's at like 34. He'll definitely be up there by the end of the year. The guy is good.

Garland is so high (relative to his 3.92 ERA) because he's had 3 God-awful starts which have destroyed his ERA, but the rest have been, on average, pretty solid.

I can quantify the rankings, if you like, but I didn't want to post them, because I still have a lot of work to do. My valuations are admittedly dirty. Plus it's not a huge sample-size, so the actual numerical valuations will have more meaning after 33-35 starts.

But for reference, Ted Lilly (30th) is at 27.25, and Penny (1st) is at a ridiculous 40.5. Hamels is 26.17.

This ranking doesn't follow a very direct relationship with Fantasy results; though surely you'll do good to have Penny, Haren, Snell, and Carmona on your team.
