Changing gears
 

As i started poker 1,5 years ago, i heard some TV moderators talking about "..." is able to change his style/gears, so that he`s unpredictable for his opponents.

1,5 years later i am asking myself in which range changing gears can be profitable.

In 6max with say 3 other regs one fish and another bad player there isn`t much room to vary your play.

Ok, we can adapt our 3bet/4bet ranges vs the reds and try to isolate or just play more pots vs the fish.

But all in all occassions in which you switch gears from your normal 20-28/ 15-22 to sth like 45/20 will be very seldom in our HS games, because this would be too exploitable.

Yea. They are more referring to tournaments. Then you change tables from a nitty table to a quite loose table, and the blinds/antes change, and a very different strategy is best.

But in cash games with the same group of players you shouldn't be going from 20/17 to 45/20.

what about postflop instead of focusing only at preflop stats(even if thats effect postflop game). You can play 25/19 and change gears postflop... or????

well obviously 45/20 is terrible, but perhaps changing between 20/16 and 30/25 would be worthwhile?

agreed.

By keeping a constant 'gear' or image, you have a better idea of how your opponents perceive you. You can then adjust/'switch gears' based on the hand ranges you think they assign to you etc. in specific spots/situations. I don't think switching gears necessarily means completely changing your pflop stats or overall image for a period of time, it can just be situational/vs. certain opponents. You don't need to go from 20/17 to 35/20 to 'switch gears'...

I wouldn't think so. It's just the idea of adapting to the dynamics. If you're at a nitty table, you will try to run over them. If you're at a crazy loose table, you're going to pick your spots.


OTOH; if you've been playing aggro for a while and you find that people catch on, you can 'change gears' and switch to more tight/nitty, then you still have an aggro imagine and can get paid off.


Obviously this is not rocket science, but to say it's a dumb or unvaluable concept is not very wise.
