Heisman Rankings

Because there is no 1 runaway candidate this year (read: top candidates sucking i.e. Matt Ryan against Florida St.) I think a case can be made for any number of candidates at this point. Here's my top 5 right now.

1. Dennis Dixon Passing: 2,074 YDS | 20 TD 3 INT | 67.9 CMP%Rushing: 549 YDS | 8 TD.

2. Tim Tebow Passing: 2,228 YDS | 21 TD 4 INT | 67.7 CMP%Rushing: 598 YDS | 14 TD

Arguably a better statline than Dixon, but team having 3 losses is going to hurt. Tebow will have to put up some huge numbers in the rest of the season to have a chance.

3. Matt Ryan Passing: 2,841 YDS | 21 TD 11 INT | 59.5 CMP%Rushing: 35 YDS | 1 TD

Two very unimpressive National TV performances these past 2 weeks. He has far too many INTs to be a Heisman Candidate, and BC has been generally unimpressive as well.

4. Mike Hart 215 ATT | 1,196 YDS | 12 TD 5.6 AVG | 61 LNG 7 REC | 43 YDS | 0 TD

There is no doubt in my mind that if Mike Hart stayed healthy for the entire year he would be the frontrunner right now. As is he had 118 yards on 15 carries against MSU, and missed half of the game.

5. I have no idea. I don't think Pat White has been impressive enough to get in the running. I don't think Glenn Dorsey has made enough of a case for himself either. Darren McFadden would probably be my #5 right now, but he had 2 games where he was completely shutdown, and I'm not that impressed by 335 yards against a bad SC run defense.

Feel free to critique/add your own lists.

My top 5:

1. Tim Tebow, QB, UF
2. Brian Brohm, QB, Louisville
3. Mike Hart, RB, Michigan
4. Jonathan Stewart, RB, Oregon
5. Dennis Dixon, QB, Oregon

IMO, Brohm gets it. Tebow gets the shaft because he's a sophomore.

Re: Heisman Rankings

man i just dont see any reason you could ever put Hart over Mcfadden. I mean Mcfadden has been struggling with injuries- had a concussion etc but he goes out there and plays when he is not near 100 percent.

That being said I dont mind ur other rankings really b/c i think they are probably what are in most peoples mind right now.

Also, I have extreme bias b/c i live in arkansas and I dont think Mike Hart is as great as a lot of people do. i could think of other runing backs such as Jonathan stewart or steve slaton

5. Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas
6. Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech
7. Chase Daniel, QB, Missouri

come on man you cant have felix ahead of darren. The reason felix is so good is because of darren. If he was the lone featured back there is no way hed be getting 10 yards a carry.

and to the guy who said Mike hart is best running back is just hilarious. I guess most people think Hart is a top 5 back but no way is he the best player or best back

Re: Heisman Rankings

What can I say? He's played better than McFadden has this season. He almost had more total yards than McFadden going into today (993-863) despite having about half as many carries.

I know McFadden had a monster game against South Carolina tonight and that's why I moved him into the Top 5, but even tonight Jones had a better average. The fact that Jones had 6 carries for 42 yards when McFadden and 17 carries for 43 in the game that cost Arkansas a chance to win the SEC West affected my decision too.

luckybacon 11-04-2007 02:09 AM

Re: Heisman Rankings

No but what im saying is that Jones would not be what he is right now if Mcfadden wasnt there. We use jones almost like Florida uses Percy Harvin or something along those lines. Defenses have to focus alot more on Mcfadden so Felix gets to pick up alot more yards.

If you reverse their roles and Jones played more the typical between the tackles role, Mcfadden's YPC average would be really sick also.

This all being said they are 2 of the top three backs in college football and thank god we have them

iggymcfly 11-04-2007 02:18 AM

Re: Heisman Rankings

I get that it's a lot easier to gain yards off of misdirection than to be the feature back and if they were maybe 2.5 YPC apart, I'd still give the nod to McFadden, but Felix Jones's numbers have been so ridiculous this year, I feel like he deserves the spot as the top back of the college football season. You can't really compare him to a receiver that runs end arounds when he gets the ball enough to be ranked in the Top 30 in the nation in rushing yards.

Number27 11-04-2007 02:24 AM

Re: Heisman Rankings

I can buy Dixon or Ryan above McFadden; but no other RB's should even be mentioned before him. Mike Hart is a good running back; but Darren McFadden is a top three to top five pick in the draft. He's the best running back the SEC has had since Bo Jackson.

Actually you can because he gets a lot of carries when McFadden is lined up as the QB. The LB's have to choose whether to stay home to defend McFadden or chase Jones when he runs outside.

Re: Heisman Rankings

i hereby nominate Chris Wells of Ohio state to be included in the top ten. stud running back. approaching 6 yds/carry that's better than hart but not stewart-like. very likely to be the best of the bunch at the next level. compared to adrian peterson. 6'1" 235, fast, super quick feet

here's hoping it happens next year. any of you hear of brandon saine? next year OSU will have the best combo of RB's in the nation, unfortunately no qb

Don't you think this benefits McFadden too? I'm sure that being able to fake to someone averaging close to 10 YPC opens up a lot of holes on the second level. The point is that Jones carries the ball enough that it's not really a "surprise" when they give it to him. He gets about 60% of the carries that McFadden does.

That's a good point; but most of the time the defense does stay home on McFadden. It's definitely subjective; but I think McFadden contributes a lot more to Jones YPC average than vice versa.

Heisman Hype?

He is ranked #3 in the nation in pass efficiency and his team is #1 in the polls. So, why hasn't there been more talk about a Heisman Trophy for Buckeye QB Todd Boeckmann? Coach Jim Tressel speculated that it's because the junior signal-caller's star has risen slowly, like the rest of the team's. "People start talking about the guys who are on teams that are doing well. And so, talk about that kind of thing in Todd's case -- or any of our guys' case -- could stop if we don't play well and escalate if we do," Tressel told reporters Tuesday. Boeckman (left) is one of 15 semifinalists for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award, it was announced Tuesday. In his first season as Ohio State's starting QB, Boeckman is 139-209 passing (66.5%) on the year for 1,799 yards, with 21 touchdown passes against just eight interceptions. His pass efficiency rating of 164.34 leads the Big Ten and ranks third nationally.

Brian Robiskie is the best player on the OSU offense, by a lot.

Corso's Boeckman comment absolutely floored me, I'm trying to think who he was thinking about when he said it. Laruinaitis? That's at least plausible, I guess.

Brian Hartline is an absolute lock to be on every franchise of Madden I play for the rest of my life. Maybe that's what Corso meant.

I think if Oregon win out Dixon is a lock if he stays healthy and doesn't have any really bad games. He had several last year so it's no stretch.

Jonathan. Stewart.

P.S. Dixon for Heisman!

Re: Heisman Rankings

If I were just ranking RBs based on what they've accomplished this season, I'd probably go:

1. Felix Jones
2. Darren McFadden
3. Jonathan Stewart
4. Rashard Mendenhall
5. Matt Forte
6. Jamaal Charles
7. Chris Wells
8. Javon Ringer
9. Kevin Smith
10. Mike Hart

Hart's a good back, but he's nowhere near as good as the Michigan fans make him out to me. His biggest strength is that he can carry the ball a lot without fumbling, but even that's not very meaningful if he can't stay healthy.

I don't understand this distinction between best college player and best NFL player. McFadden is just plain better than Mike Hart. Period.
