The team that played this past week on that brutal road trip is nothing like the one that will be playing the rest of the season. Pahlsson and Giguere should be back possibly by Wednesday. Then there still is Schneider out for a bit. Plus, there's always the possibility that Selanne and Niedermayer return at some point.

My only concern with the Ducks so far is that Bryzgalov has sucked, hurting his trade value. I'm really thinking he's shipped out shortly as Hiller looks like a great backup option.

Bryzgalov's trade value would go down from a 2nd round pick to a 3rd round pick.

Almost no one wants a goalie, and certainly not for a high price.

I think your biggest concern should be the offense.. 4 goals total in the first 4 games. The did score 4 vs Pit, but the 4th was w/ ~20 seconds left in the game. Even w/ that game.. 1.6 goals/game is not gonna win many games and Pahlsson's 20-25 points/season isn't gonna help all that much.

I think they would be elated to get a 2nd rounder. A 3rd-4th rounder is probably about right, and they are def not complaining if they get a 3rd.

Atlanta is terrible so far. Without Hossa, they are lost. How have they not fired Don Waddell yet? He is without a doubt one of the worst GMs in hockey.

Which surprised me to some extent. I didn't think they would be this well off so far. Oh well, Staal/Cole/Ward are doing wonders for me in fantasy leagues.

Ottawa looks unstoppable as expected, and Minny looks real good too now that Backstrom is the number one (mind you their schedule has been easy).

Re: ***Official 2007-2008 NHL Season Thread***

WTF IS WITH THE INSTIGATOR PENALTY?! They bring in a retarded rule and then use it absolutely randomly.

A few games ago, Torres lays a dirty (surprise, surprise) knee to knee on Mitchell... Doug Murray goes after him and both drop the gloves and fight. Murray gets an instigator penalty.

Next game, Davidson throws a LEGAL hit on a Blackhawk, and a Blackhawk jumps Davidson. They both fight.. no instigator! It was seriously the same exact scenario as the previous game.

Tonight, final minute of play, a few Canucks jump Milan Michalek (who doesn't fight) and Ryane Clowe. One Canuck is choking Clowe from behind while another punches him. Two Canucks are on Michalek. Now this is a perfect candidate for the instigator penalty, since the game is over (4-2, minute left, Sharks on the power play, players jumping Sharks) yet no instigator is called.

Great job inventing a retarded rule and not even using it in the most appropriate way.

Cooke is a [censored], please go get ran over by Thornton some more. At least idiots like Torres will drop the gloves and not hide behind visors.

That would be a silly assumption. Too bad the NHL isn't decided by TSN rankings. Citing Cheechoo being scoreless as the reason to rank a team near the bottom is beyond retarded. We would have at least 1 more point if it wasn't for a 5 posts + a referee that can't move his fat ass.

BTW, NHL finally updated the game summary. Cooke will receive an automatic 10 game suspension for leaving the bench. Two canucks received game misconducts, but the thing that pisses me off most about the NHL is that even if you are roughed up- you receive a penalty. Clowe gets a misconduct for being choked by a pussy and sucker punched.

Re: ***Official 2007-2008 NHL Season Thread***

the instigator penalty is called less often in the 3rd period because of the new rule brought in that calls for a mandatory suspension + fine of the player + fine of the coach for instigating a fight in the final five minutes of a game.

my guess is that if it's as egregious as you say, they might go ahead and do that anyway.

Yes, the rankings are stupid. Nashville, with a losing record, is ahead of several good teams.

If I'm not mistaken, the rankings are somewhat based on stat projections of players.

Yup: "Note: Power Rankings are produced using a formula that takes into account a compilation of individual player grades based on statistical production. More importantly, the team grades intend to take into account which players are in the lineup to replace those who are out due to injury or suspension and aim to reflect which team would win a seven-game series on a neutral rink."

So if the Ducks last year had Pronger or Nieds out, they would have dropped in the rankings, despite a game without them is really insignificant. If a player gets hot, the team rises. It's really a dumb way to power rank teams.

I believe both players have to drop the gloves and engage for it to be an instigator as well. In this case, gloves weren't dropped by everyone- so an instigator can't be called (which is retarded IMO). Cooke will receive a 10-game suspension for being the first player over and be fined the maximum allowed under the CBA. The team will be fined $10,000 (big deal) and the Coach might be suspended/fined $10,000.

Cooke was a healthy scratch in the previous Canucks game. The coach told him he needed to play his game and be an agitator to get back in the lineup.... seems like a roughing penalty + the altercation was a bit much. Thornton stated what he thought of Cooke to the Vancouver media before tonight's game.

Re: ***Official 2007-2008 NHL Season Thread***

Wow, Cooke might have been on the ice the entire time, not sure.

I think the Canuck feed showed everything more clearly, so things might be dropped... I only had access to the SJ feed where Drew Remenda was using UFC terminology.

Good picture:
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/344...024x768oy1.jpg
I never saw that... they only showed it when Cooke appeared to be sitting on the bench door and really had his arm under Clowe. From a Canucks' POV, Clowe came in and checked Ritchie and Cooke (not sure if he was on the ice or jumped on) grabbed Clowe and that's when SJ cameras started focusing on Clowe.

okay, big deal, there was a scrum and the sharks had their 150-pounders on the ice against the overpowering figure of matt cooke

what's really pissing me off is how [censored] bad kiprusoff is playing right now. going into tonight's game (that he indeed started), he was sporting a 3.33 GAA and .875 SV%. not to mention calgary has blown a 4-0 lead early in the second to go into the second intermission tied 4-4 against colorado. jesus, the season is barely two and a half weeks old and he's already got me pulling my hair out over fantasy hockey

Anyone see Nash's goal last night? Simply amazing..... might have made Crosby cry again. I've found a couple links for it, but none have the reverse angle (which gives the best view).

Played a wide slapper by Hainsey off the boards to the right of the net, grabbed the puck, put it between his legs and straight up into the net from about 1-2 feet.

2nd best goal in NHL this year behind Toews....

Someone has Brodeur on a fantasy team, I see.

The Devils are bad because their defense is Paul Martin, Johnny Oduya, Karel Rachunek, Andy Greene, Vitali Vishnevsky, and Sheldon Brookbank. For those of you counting, that's two guys who've been in the NHL since 03-04, one overage free agent, one guy who played overseas for two seasons in the middle of his career, one rookie, and one guy who's 27 and played 3 NHL games (or his replacement, a guy who's 29 and played about 30). Throw on top of that a new offensive and defensive system, and it's going to take some time to get used to how things are run in Jersey.
