Each Les press conference makes me hope he isn't our next coach more. He sounds retarded.

[/ QUOTE ]

He makes most SEC fans very happy by staying. It's not like he is some amazing recruiter, the school recruits itself & they have almost complete control on a good High School football state. Not that I like looking at rankings in recruiting, but they have 20 guys this year & not a bunch of highly rated ones. Not impressed. They have the 2nd lowest rating per player in the top 15 on Rivals.

[/ QUOTE ]
Translation: they have the number 14 rated recruiting class according to rivals.

Right, but 14 would not be a bad thing if they didn't have 20 guys committed

Re: Les Miles to Coach Michigan

As a UC alum, season ticket holder and Michigan hater Brian Kelly in my opinion is the best option. He is a proven winner at every level and is in the same mold of a Jim Tressel. With respect to winning at all levels not in coaching strategy or game management. He runs a gimmicky offence and has made some very shaky game management calls at UC this year. His type of offense does not seem to fit the mold of a typical top tier Big ten team but his offense may change as his talent pool increases.

I am rooting for the Iowa coach so Michigan can have another Carr clone. If they do hire the Iowa coach Michigan can expect another 5-10 years of Tressel dominance. Regardless of who the new coach is Miles just sucked the life out of any momentum Michigan had coming. The new coach will have a big hill to climb to gain any equity against TOSU.

Right, which is why I prefaced my response saying that recruiting rankings/stars are kind of silly. It's somewhat consensus that LSU has got the guys they want but are being looked at strangely for some of the guys. Just thought that I would point out it's not really hard to recruit at a lot of schools so I would be worried about some of Les' in-game decisions just as I would about a bunch of others.

Okay. CBS just aired a quick talk between their interview chick and Les Miles that happened after the press conference. He said again, "I'm the coach at LSU, I'm going to be the coach at LSU." She said, "Next year?" and he said, "Yes, I'm going to be the coach at LSU next year."

I guess that's that.

[/ QUOTE ]

Right, because coaches never, ever, ever lie about this stuff.

Herbstreit just came on ESPN and said that he is VERY confident in his sources, and that one of two things could have happened:

a) LSU gave Miles a ridiculous contract that he just could not turn down and beat Michigan to the punch.

b) this saga is not over.

I find it hard to believe that Herby would reiterate how confident he is in his sources on TV. Why not just rescind his comment if its not true?

Listening to this LSU post-game press-conference...it sure sounds about over. Just said, flat out, he won't talk to us.

Not verbatim but something like this...

Reporter: "you left a little wiggle room..."
Miles: "there's no wiggle room. I'm certain. I can't take another job if I don't talk to anyone. I love it here, it's good to be home".

People need to realize that there are millions of dollars involved for agents and coaches, as well as TV ratings. The truth isn't really a prioirity when reporting these coaching rumors.

even then, it's a one-sided story

Herbstreit gets in a little dig at Miles on the ABC broadcast of the BigXII Champ game:

Musberger: "Miles said no wiggle room...Miles would have to walk on the same branch that Saban did to get to Ann Arbor at this point."

Herbstreit: "Or the same thing Miles did to Oklahoma State".

For Herbie to go on the air, there had to be some legitimate source. I find it hard to believe there was no Miles/UM negotiation and it seems to me he leveraged UM to get more money.

If it becomes apparent that he was secretly negotiating with Michigan in order to leverage more dollars out of LSU while having no intention of taking our job, then I vote to take away his Michigan Man membership card.

Given that LSU is probably headed to the national title game and he's made several blanket denials he'll leave LSU, I've conceded it's time to move on and start fawning over another candidate. Brian Kelly is looking like a longshot because of resume issues. Tedford is similarly unlikely and has had some of the shine taken away after the 1-6 finish to this season.

I guess Schiano is now the most appealing of the 'likely' candidates, although I'll admit I don't even know who the 'likely' candidates are anymore.

[/ QUOTE ]

There's the fundamental issue of institutional conservatism to deal with. I think the job is generally 'appealing' -- there's no reason a decent coach wouldn't come here.

But there aren't a whole lot of coaches who the Athletic Department would consider a good "fit" here. Some schools with Michigan's resources would probably try to drive a truck full of money up to Spurrier's or Stoop's doorstep and convince them to come; not Michigan. That's obviously not how the AD operates (Beilein hire sort of excluded). Some school's would look past the questionable issues on Brian Kelly's resume. Apparently, not Michigan. There's a finite amount of coaches who are proven winners at the collegiate level and who are compatible with what the AD are looking for. Unfortunately, none of them are particularly "sexy". The Detroit News Michigan beat writer listed the probable top-5 candidates, and that list includes Jim Grobe, Tom O'Brien, and Gary Pinkel. Yaaawn. Martin said his ideal candidate would be to clone Lloyd. But I agree with you: if our list is Ferentz, Grobe, O'Brien and Pinkee, we may as well just see if Lloyd's available to rehire, because these guys are 2nd or 3rd tier at best.

Obviously the day's Miles drama + OSU getting into the national title game + realization we don't have any great Plan B's after Miles + basketball team losing to Amaker's Harvard team = bad night, so maybe I'm overly pessimistic right now. The day's action also probably means Michigan is headed to the Cap One bowl (good), but it also means we're probably going to play Florida (bad). I assume we're something like 2 TD dogs in that matchup.

I wouldn't blame Miles if he is outrigtht lying about not going to Michigan. You expect him to disrupt his team before the sec championship and possibly a national championship. Michigan is one that handled this bad.

As far as Herbstreit is concerned, do you expect him to say oops I ran with something I shouldn't have.
