*****Official Les Miles Screws Over Michigan By Resigning With LSU****

Not really surprised he took the job. It just makes sense. It's hard to win a title in LSU with such a hard schedule. The Big11Ten is super weak and a title from there might be for the taking.

Part of me likes it because I think Miles makes some awkward decisions and gambles too much. The other part of me doesn't like it for that same reason.

UPDATE: lol Michigan

According to Carty:

"A 1:45 p.m. press conference has been scheduled by LSU prior to today's Southeastern Conference title game between the Tigers and Tennessee to announce the new deal and its terms.

LSU will reportedly make Miles one of the highest-paid coaches in the country."

Re: Les Miles to Coach Michigan

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3136391

"LSU coach Les Miles will meet with the media at the Georgia Dome before the SEC Championship Game to announce that he is staying at LSU, a source told ESPN.com.

LSU associate athletic director Herb Vincent said Saturday morning that ESPN reports that Miles had accepted the head coaching position at Michigan were "inaccurate." Miles agreed to a contract extension Saturday with LSU."

[censored] Martin or Miles or ESPN for

or
b) falsely reporting the deal was done.

OK, but I'm watching ESPN/ABC and there has been no mention of this. Seems strange...I'm not 100% convinced this is a done deal yet.

Yep, ESPN says Miles will meet with the media before the game today to announce he is staying. WTF is going on, lol. I guess it's time for me to start praying for Brian Kelly again, or maybe Tedford.

Hmm...I wonder if it was Michigan or LSU, i.e. did Carr keep it from happening or did he turn down the job?

ESPN website is reporting Miles staying at LSU; ESPN News is reporting Miles is taking the Michigan job. Pretty much ESPN blows. I'm sure the website is 'more up to date' than ESPN News.

If we hire DeBord I will cease to support Michigan.

Honestly I think the whole thing is kind of a crapshoot. When Nebraska hired Callahan it looked like a good hire. When tOSU hired Tressel the general reaction was "Jim WHO?" That said, I think it's pretty clear DeBord would be a disaster.

Angelique Changelis (Michigan beat writer for Detroit News) was on ESPN News saying that Schiano, Jim Grobe and Gary Pinkel are now the favorites for the job. Says Kelly isn't really on the short list.

The great ones redefine themselves by creating new traditions.

Overall:

I like Miles but don't LOVE him. While he is certainly suboptimal in his in game decision making, his batshit insanity makes up for this (he is so aggressive he sometimes makes the correct decision for the wrong reason -- and his apparent randomness in his decisions can simulate game theoretic optimality). However, he has kept the LSU program at a very high level, and it's hard to ask more of a coach than that.

I was won over by Miles after the 2005 season. Louisiana got hit with two hurricanes that year, and it SEVERLY disrupted the team.

I am not jumping on the "Miles sucks" bandwagon. When all factors are considered, he is considerably better than most college coaches IMO.

DVaut1 12-01-2007 03:13 PM

Re: Les Miles to Coach Michigan

I still think it's 98% he's staying at LSU, but that press conference was a little ambiguous. If you've seen the video (turn on ESPN News), then picture Miles being very pissed as he says this:

Miles: "There was misinformation on ESPN and I think it's imperative that I straighten it out. I'm the head coach at LSU, I will be the head coach at LSU, I have no interest in talking to anyone else. I have a championship game to play and I'm excited about the opportunity of my damn strong football team to play in it. And that's really all I'd like to say. It's unfortunate I had to address my team with this information this morning. With that being done, I think we'll be ready to play. There will be no questions for me; I represent me in this issue, please ask me after. I'm busy. Thank you very much, and have a great day."

No mention of extension. Chancellor wouldn't take questions.

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't know if it's fair to say he "screwed" over Michigan, but he's dropped hints he loves Michigan and it was his dream job, etc. If he really intended on staying at LSU, then he "screwed" over Michigan by using us as leverage for his big money extension. At least that's what the narrative is.

Gregatron 12-01-2007 03:18 PM

Re: Les Miles to Coach Michigan

Skip Bertman (LSU's AD) is claiming that Miles has agreed to a contract extension according to ABC.

Riverman 12-01-2007 03:19 PM

Re: Les Miles to Coach Michigan

The press conference was super-weird. He didn't say "I signed an extension," he said "I don't want another job." Big difference.

This guy loves Michigan and the job will not open up again in his coaching lifetime. I'm not 100% convinced he's staying.
