First time on a course

When you play for the first time on a new course, how many shots do you "give yourself" at the end of a round? I'm not talking about reducing your score, but how many extra shots, on average, do you think that you take because it's your first time through? The reasons may vary, from blind tee shots and approaches, incorrect yardage markers (grrr) to first time putting on the greens, whatever.

Re: First time on a course

I usually find that there are only 2-3 holes on a course when I think to myself "well that would have been good to know..." I don't think putting on unfamiliar greens should really count though... blind tee shots, yardage mistakes, holes playing longer/shorter than you would think...those count. So I guess 3-4 strokes would probably be a rough estimate. There are some courses, though, that it could easily get up to 10-12 shots...but the majority of courses I play are not that tricky.

KodOT,

Not sure why you got gay responses right out of the gate. It is a legitimate question.

Typically I need to play a course a couple/three times before I feel comfortable with it. Being able to visualize the hole in front of me is a huge advantage IMO, and a yardage guide or GPS system on the cart doesn't fill in all the blanks for me. Maybe it's the comfort zone thing more than anything, but I'm typically a full 6-8 shots higher the first time through.

My bad - I read your OP as "extra shots" = mulligans/redo's

On a difficult course it can be easily six shots, even if I prepare ahead of time by studying the course layout.

Depends on how much of these fairways there are:

I always have a tough time judging the carry distance and the width when the fairway is running crosswise like this. Then, if I happen to pick a favorable line, there's still the matter of hitting it along that line.

I actually play better on an unfamiliar course as long as the course is not gimicky. I think it has to do with the fact that when I play a new course I'm forced to play one shot at a time since I don't know what lies ahead.
