i really havent been super impressed w/ LSU's D either. 3 of the intro's were gimme's and they arent stopping the run nearly as well as they should given the complete lack of a passing game for MSU.

Mississippi State is looking a lot better than most many people think.

Of course LSU is also not looking nearly as good as I hope they really are. Hopefully we can get our offense straight. I am convinced Flynn is much better than this.

meh give him a break, his O-line is not doing him any favors ATM, which is going to slow down his getting used to starting in the SEC quite a lot. FWIW when he's had time to throw he's looked fine IMO.

Good point. The O line is not looking great at the moment.

As I wrote that sentence they just pwned for a 13 yard run for Hester.

SICK CRACKBACK BLOCK!

EDIT to add: nice drive. Flynn to Doucet is shaping up to be a pretty nice combo. (Salt and pepper lol).

Re: 2007 SEC Football Thread

That was definitely a sick block. I kinda saw it out the corner of my eye the first time and I couldn't believe it was a receiver that delivered when they showed the replay. That was a huge hit.

FWIW if im an LSU fan im muuuuch more concerned about run defense and the O-line than the QB situation heading into VT. As an auburn fan im really hopingyou guys win that one so it will be more impressive if we beat you

Re: 2007 SEC Football Thread

It's cool.

Here is something I was wondering. I thought the ball went into the endzone for a touchback. Is it better for LSU to challenge if this were the case, or to take the ball on the 1 to practice this in a real game situation with the game well in hand? (Might seem like a dumb question, but the answer is not obvious for me.)

EDIT: questions need question marks.

Here's their schedule, pick the 6 wins.

[/ QUOTE ]

[ QUOTE ]
Richmond, Ole Miss, Eastern Michigan, Miami

I think they win 2 of UGA,UK,WF,Bama.
It's a tough schedule though so certainly no lock.

[/ QUOTE ]
Basically this is what I'd post, although I'm not so high on SC so I think they've got a shot there as well.

Like I said, its not like any Vandy fan is looking for a top 25 ranking. Just going to a bowl would be great, and from everything I've heard this year's team should be as good if not better than '05's, when a missed 30-yd FG was all that kept them and Cutler from it.

esp. given the penetration MSU has gotten at times tonight and the amount of time left in the game when it happened, LSU would def. have challenged it had they felt it went in. Maybe w/ the same amt of time left in the 4th they wouldnt challenge it, but it would be more to keep from prolonging the game than to practive beig pinned against the goal line.

Glad to see Perriloux in the game now. Hopefully he can take a few snaps without getting in any trouble. (And I mean arrested.)

fwiw i meant b/c he was obv hurt and they have no one capable of running the offense behind him, not b/c he has sucked horribly (although obv he has). Also, Perriloux is a [censored] beast.

Re: 2007 SEC Football Thread

I would not be surprised if Ryan Perrilloux is not another LSU quarterback to be selected early in the first round. This is assuming he manages to stay out of prison.

Is it scary that many people say a team that won 45-0 against a mediocre road opponent didn't play very well?

Yes it is. And let's be real here, while Miss St. is horrible they are in the SEC and pull SEC caliber talent. I find this win more impressive than the Louisville 73-10 over a high school team.

While I agree LSU didn't play as well as I hoped, I've got the feeling they kept it pretty simple for Matt Flynn's sake as well as not tipping their hat to VT. By the end of the season with the amount of pure talent on this team LSU will be an offensive juggernaut.

Terrible analysis.

Their poor play is a result of missed assignments, mental gaffes, penalties, and other sorts of blatant errors. The final score has little to do with whether you play well or poorly especially when you say "mediocre road opponent" which could really mean anything. Since a shut out is almost a given with a team as poor offensively as State.

Austiger 08-31-2007 10:20 AM

Re: 2007 SEC Football Thread

Sly Croom could have kept State in the game well into the 2nd half and given his team/fanbase/recruits hope for the season if he hadn't completely abandoned the run. Once you start dropping Henig back every down and letting LSU pin the ears back you are basically throwing in the towel.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think your analysis is a little off.

I agree LSU played poorly on offense. I think the RT Stewart is a huge liability. He got pwned basically every play and Matt Flynn looked like the speed of the game was too much for him at times.

BUT.

Miss St. while not very good, is an SEC team with a decent history and pulls some talent. That being said, LSU wrecked them defensively and that's not going to change from week to week. We might have watched college football's best defense last night. What is going to change from week to week is the friggin fullback isn't going to get the bulk of the carries. LSU might actually play in a 4/5 WR set with 1/0 RB and throw the ball 35 times in a game instead of basic handoff right/left/up the middle. That was polar opposite of any Gary Crowton coached team in histoy. I expect a test from VT next week but in the end the more of the same.....a LSU victory.

Gregatron 08-31-2007 01:03 PM

Re: 2007 SEC Football Thread

LSU mos def has to make some progress offensively. Something I found very encouraging was how they came out after halftime. It seems like they were able to make some adjustments, and operated much better.

I do have concerns about the RT.

Yeah ok dude, Miss St. lost to Tulane either last year or the year before at HOME. The fact that I go to this school and can't remember this should tell you how little anyone here cares about football, how bad Tulane is, and how incredibly bad MSU is in turn. The fact that they pull "SEC talent" is simply because they are in the SEC, not because anyone on their team has been good recently.

And they still suck.

This reminds me of notre damers holding their head high as they beat Navy or Army. Yay.

When's the last time MSU won more than 3 games in a season?

Mind you, they did lose to Maine a couple years ago. Which must've been a shock with all that 'SEC caliber' they pull.

I don't think I ever called beating Miss St. a huge win. I simple stated it deserves a little more credit than practically every other team in the Top 25 playing Div II teams this week.

This is what I got out of what you were saying. I read it as

LSU >>>> MS State

UL >>>>>>>>>>>>&g t;>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>&g t;>>>>>>>> Murray State

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: 2007 SEC Football Thread

MSU is really that bad. They simply don't have the talent to win in the SEC regardless of their coach. And look at the records of Bama and UF the years state beat them. Those teams were far from elite. State can't even get the top guys from Mississippi.
