would this work in basketball?

Situation:
Up by 2, 1 second left and the other team has 1 foul shot left
You know they will miss on purpose and hope to get the rebound and score

Goaltend the shot attempt.Just jump in right when he shoots it and block it. They will get 1 point and you will get possession up by 1.Its even better if you have a time out left so you'll get to impound at half court.

I believe this would result in the free throw being retried.

Keep on doing it. And then don't do it at some point. Let game theory decide when. Or read serial numbers off dollar bills to decide.

I don't think there is goaltending on free throws. You run the risk of accidentally fouling on a dead ball. I suppose the ref could even give you a technical foul for being a dick, which would really hurt you.

But your question reminds me of a strategy a college coach brought up at a clinic I attended. He said when the other team is trying to intentionally miss in the situation you described, violate the lane on the shot every time. Just line up with your feet clearly in the lane. You violate the lane, they miss, the ref blows the whistle and lets them shoot again. As they shoot over and over, and you commit a violation each time until they accidentally make the shot. I'm not sure what happens if they miss the iron completely for a shooting violation.

Free throw is good and a technical is awarded. I wouldn't advise trying it.

Uncle Wimp's thought is just as interesting. I'd like to see this happen in a Final Four game or something.

Ref would give you a tech for repeatedly doing it.
