Starting Bankroll

This question is about how much do you sit down to play with at the limit tables.

Is there a amount based on the upper limit? say x times the upper limit? As the limits increase to higher amounts, how do you know what to start with?

If you're playing at 4-8/6-12 games what should you sit down to play with...

Seems to me that at the 4-8 games you would need at least a min of $140 and the 6-12 tables $240.

Thanks for taking the time to read this post... look forward to tne replys.

I buy in for the largest amount that will not make people look at me and think "hey, that's a lot of chips". At my card room, that's $200 at 6/12 and $100 at 3/6. In either case if I lose 60% of it, I add on, and proceed from there.

I usually buy in for 2 racks at any game. I still get looks every time cause everyone else buys in for 1 rack but I don't care any more. So @ 4/8 that is $200, 8/16 $400 and so on. I love short buy players.

Jesse...

Thanks for the reply. If my bankroll is based on 300times the big bet that would mean a bankroll of $1800 for 3/6 and $2400 for 4/8.

If I sit down at a table to play I should play with 10% of the bankroll?.. that would equate wtih $180 for 3/6 and $240 for 4/8... does that sound right?

I can see your point on not sitting down with the whole amount of $180/$240... that makes sense....

From what I'm reading in the beginners section seems like I'm on the right track.

Thanks again for the reply...

Re: Starting Bankroll

Basically I don't want people to notice me when I sit down, which is why I try to buy in under the radar.

The answer to your other question in a little more interesting. The correct answer is that if you're a winning player, you should play so long as you're playing well and feel you have an edge on the table, regardless of how much you're stuck. In actuality, I find I have a threshold of loss beyond which I play poorly, and try not to play after losing $400 at 6/12. I broke this rule last Friday in an attempt to raise my threshold, with semi-catastrophic results.

And I usually have enough for two more racks in my pocket.

I usually play the 6/12 and 8/16 games at my respective card rooms, i try for the 8/16 since theres a half kill kill

I buy in for 2 racks at both games (400), that way I can make a 2D pyramid, rather than a pyramid without a top, and hope to make a tetrahedran (spelling?) once im up 2 racks

EDIT: i guess a 2D pyramid would be a triangle, but pyramid sounds cooler

I usually buy in for one rack (e.g. $500 for a 5/10 game), with enough in my pocket for another rack. I've never had anyone even bat an eye at this amount.

To the OP: Since you are talking about limit poker, and low limit at that, no one cares or will be able to adjust their play to whatever you buy in for. In other words, IT DOESN'T MATTER. Buy in for what you are comfortable, and just insure that you always have at least 12BB in front of you at the start of the hand.

Buy in for four racks. Sell chips, save time. Make money.
