Tunica, MS or New Orleans, LA

Going to the panhandle for family thanksgiving and will have a few days to burn, so I'm thinking of driving to either New Orleans or Tunica for a couple days. Wife will probably be in tow (we are both 26), so good restaurants/decent hotels are a must. She can hold her own at 1/2NL, I play up to 5/10NL. Which one would you go to as they are both 4 hour drive or so???

I went to New Orleans in 2000 for Mardi Gras but of course that was all pre-Katrina and pre poker and was disgusted at the "dirty" feel of the city. I've never been to Tunica.

Depends on your goal of the trip. Is it just to play cards & win monies...or...is it to hit the social scene & check out everything your destination has to offer?

Well, there's not a lot to see or do in Tunica outside of casino hopping. A few concerts or shows maybe but you'd have to go to Memphis if you want something other than gaming.

I played in a touring jazz band for a few years, so we were in NO at least twice a year. I used to love that city (dirt and all) pre-katrina. Haven't been back since. I know other people who have said they didn't like the "dirty" aspects of it, so I guess it's just a love it or hate it kind of city. Regardless, this will have 1000x more restaurant and non-poker entertainment options than Tunica. On the other hand, Tunica will have better poker overall, and definitely better and bigger game selection. That being said, flipping back to NO, the players you'll find in the Harrah's in NO are mostly tourists (and probably drunk at that). So, while you won't find as big of a game selection in NO, the games are likely to be softer.

If my wife and I were going on a trip for good food/entertainment and poker, I'd go to NO.

Voted New Orleans but that's because I play here and want to take your monies, LDO.

Thanksgiving is Bayou Classic weekend. Always a lively time in New Orleans.

Definatly more to do in NO but the poker IMO is much better in Tunica.

If you don't like the city of New Orleans then you probably shouldn't bother. Since you've already been there you should have some idea of whether it is a good fit for you or not.
New Orleans happens to be my numero uno favorite city. If you want non-poker/gambling entertainment options then New Orleans is far and away the best choice.

If you just want the best poker then Tunica is the best choice but there is NOTHING else there at all. A nice steakhouse at the Horseshoe casino and another nice one at Gold Strike. Good comps and a good buffet there...blah blah blah.
But otherwise if you want ANYTHING else to do other than poker and steak then you will have to go to Memphis.

Also - it's not like either one is especially close to the panhandle of Florida.
From Destin or Pensacola or so it will be roughly 8+ hours to get to Tunica. It's a pretty good hike.

Also note that you might not find much 5/10 NL action. But in Tunica that's kind of a different animal because the 2/5 NL has no cap on the buy-in. So you are playing 2/5 but there might be several players playing live-straddles before the deal to already double things for you. And some players will buy-in for several thousand.
I believe it plays significantly deeper than the kind of 2/5 NL many are used to from elsewhere in the country.

Another option would be Biloxi, MS. The new poker-room at the Beau Rivage is especially nice. There isn't exactly a ton to do in Biloxi other than gambling but at least it's not as long a hike from the panhandle.

Thanks MB I meant to put Biloxi as one of the choices, but just forgot. I might just donk around at Ebro next Friday or Saturday and spend the winnings at Golden Nugget or whatever that dive stripper joint is lol
