Evel.

He was just a touch before my time but his name was still part of our jargon growing up, referring to someone who was reckless.

I was positive he died like 20 years ago.

He was Man among boys. I wish I could find the video but near the end of career he jumps a crapload of busses, crashes hard, breaks his pelvis, then stands up and addresses the crowd with said broken pelvis.

Evil was an iconic part of my childhood. I remember when that stupid chute opened on the snake river jump. Damnit. He would have cleared it easily....(at least my young brain thought so)

RIP

I met Evel about 2 1/2 years ago, he was a very nice guy, down to earth. We talked motorcycle for a little while, he told me he still owns his very first motorcycle.

Re: RIP Evil Knievel

From Wiki:

"Knievel dropped out of high school after his sophomore year and got a job with the Anaconda Mining Company as a diamond drill operator in the copper mines. He was promoted to surface duty where his job was driving a large earth mover. Knievel was fired when he made the earth mover pop a motorcycle-type wheelie and drove it into Butte's main power line, leaving the city without electricity for several hours."

Edit: Anyone else have that toy stunt cycle with the serrated plastic rip cord?...good times.

I'll remember watching him on Wide World of Sports on the weekends jumping over something/anything.

I remember having two of these when I was a kid in the 70's. You could pose Evel however you wanted on the handlebars or footpegs, and then insert the ripcord, yank on it and away he went doin wheelies or crashing in to crap.

I had one of these with the hand crank that you used to build up speed before releasing the cycle.

Bah Vista beat me to that pic, so I'll add this one!

As a kid, Evel taught us that if we dreamed it, we could do it. Later, he taught us that he was just F'n crazy, and we'd most likely die if we went his route.

Thanks for bein' my childhood hero Evel, and RIP.

What a shame, RIP Evel.

My sister lives in Tampa and a good friend of hers is/was his neighbor. He said the guy was really cool and fun to talk to.

That reminded of a song about Evel from a Boston band called The Neighborhoods. It kicks ass if you like 80's style hard rock.

Re: RIP Evil Knievel

I heard this and a small part of my childhood died.I'm only 23 so i missed the highlights of his carear but still looked up to him as my idol. Because of him I wanted to be a daredevil growing up. And I mean up until my freshman year of highschool then I wanted to be a stunt man. I then abonded those dreams. Its kind of wierd having your childhood hero die. Strange feeling.

Evel did have a unique, very 70sish shtick that will probably never be repeated in the same way.

But doesn't he have a son into similar stunts?
