Even though you didn't get a good look at the plate, I'd definitely call the police and tell them this whole story, exactly as you wrote it, if you can. I'm sure they'll be able to fix everything for you and make sure that the next time you pull into a NJ rest stop at 1AM, you aren't bothered by any weirdos.

My thoughts exactly. By the second or third time you ask what would you do I would have been out of there for sure. If such a situation occurred, I'm pretty sure I would be pumped enough to drive to the nearest stop.

I was on the edge of my seat.
I've driven from NC to Mass overnight alone before so I know what it's like to be tired in a rest stop.

It was a bit anticlimactic.
Thought that sharp knife was gonna come into play.
