Need alchohol suggestions, brother coming home from Iraq
He has been in Iraq since March 06, was initially scheduled to return at the end of March07, but had his stay extended till July12(followed by 2week debriefing at a US military base). While bad in its own right, ended up being a major beat, as he was going to be the best man in our cousin's wedding July7th and is now unable.
I was looking for alcohol suggestions for the party when he gets back, budget of $650-1000, around 15people that will be drinking Champagne is Dom Perignon worth the price? Nice bottle(s) of scotch as a welcome home gift I'm pretty clueless when it comes to scotch Assorted other liquor for drinks |
Re: Need alchohol suggestions, brother coming home from Iraq
Vodka: Stoli is my personal favorite. Sky is ok. Real man DO NOT drink grey goose, sorry
Hennessee is a must imo. If you can get Remy, power to you. Patron is good, and i don't like tequila. Don't get champagne unless there's hoes, and even then they should be drinking hard stuff. Bayleys is good for the girls too, i like to mix it with rum. For rum i suggest Brugal or Barcelo Imperial. did i leave anything out? |
Re: Need alchohol suggestions, brother coming home from Iraq
if u want to be classy buy some don.
if u want to get really drunk buy some 94% and make something good with it |
Re: Need alchohol suggestions, brother coming home from Iraq
My current favorite Scotches:
Lagavulin 16 Laphroaig 15 Both $60-$80 For champagne and just about anything else, go to Costco. Sometimes they have good deals on Dom. |
Re: Need alchohol suggestions, brother coming home from Iraq
White Russian ftw! CAN'T LOSE.

My current favorite Scotches: Lagavulin 16 Laphroaig 15 [/ QUOTE ] Both very good, but don't get them unless you know specifically and clearly that you (or he)likes peaty scotch. Balvenie Doublewood 12yr gets mentioned quite a bit on 2p2, and for good reason, I feel. Be aware, much sweeter than the two above. But also cheaper (~$40). If people who don't know the difference will be drinking, you might as well get a bottle of Dom since it's such a significant event, IMO. If they're not particularly discriminating, might as well go for the Wow! factor and get something they'll recognize. I bow to your brother, btw. Much respect. |
Re: Need alchohol suggestions, brother coming home from Iraq
If you want something a little different, go with some Cachaça. A couple of them will have everyone at the party on their ass.

Re: Need alchohol suggestions, brother coming home from Iraq
Johnnie Walker Blue Label. About 250 bucks for a bottle but well, well worth it. Something for just you and your brother to share when you get the time.

Re: Need alchohol suggestions, brother coming home from Iraq
15 people? How many males?
I suggest a keg of a some micro pale and then some whiskey, preferably Jack Daniels. This is your brother, who just came home from Iraq, a country with no alcohol. He wants to drink beer, tons of it. Trust me, my brother was the same way. |
Re: Need alchohol suggestions, brother coming home from Iraq
i don't know, i feel like he'll be drinking beer everyday for a month. why not get wasted off some quality vodka and rum??
btw salt cracka, you made a very memorable post once about climbing a mountain to smoke a bowl. well, there's a beautiful mountain here in dominican republic, mount isabel, and i plan on following ur advice. /hijack. |
Re: Need alchohol suggestions, brother coming home from Iraq
unbluffable, I know which post you are referring to. I use to do it everyday after work, which made my life amazingly relaxed. Have fun.

The vast majority of expert taste testers can not differentiate between a $50 dollar bottle of Vodka and a $10 bottle when blind taste tested. The only difference is the perception of quality or lack there of as defined by advertising guru’s that have spent their careers convincing us that water is wine. |

Re: Need alchohol suggestions, brother coming home from Iraq
I think after serving in military your bro will be more humble, and more "simple" @ least thats how my cousin was. So I would say don't go all out with like 70$ bottles. However you know him better, so use your own discretion.
Also, "any real man know that vodka is vodka"? WTF? Myabe your taste buds don't work. |
Re: Need alchohol suggestions, brother coming home from Iraq
Hangar One Lime + Sprite is my new favorite drink. SO GOOD.

Re: Need alchohol suggestions, brother coming home from Iraq
A really good friend of mine got back last year. My roomates and I threw him a big BBQ, we got a few cases of some nice beers (Sam Adams, Heineken, Newcastle, Purple Haze, Sweetwater Blue) a couple bottles of decent liquor ( Absolut, Jack Daniels, tanquerray, Petron) and a bunch of steaks and racks of ribs.
He said he couldn't have imagined a better homecoming, BBQ's and hanging with friends/family were the things he missed most while in the Mid-East. |
Re: Need alchohol suggestions, brother coming home from Iraq
get some Captains Private Stock Rum , some Absolute Vodka (I recommend Citron) , mixers , and his favorite beer and you're set.
|
Re: Need alchohol suggestions, brother coming home from Iraq
Stoly > Absolute

Re: Need alchohol suggestions, brother coming home from Iraq
tbh, dont get expensive stuff.. just pick up a few handles of crown, a couple handles of some decent tequila (sauza hornitos for ritas, patron for shots), grab a blender, get some minute maid limeade, make margaritas, and have crown and cokes. everyone is happy, and u can get lets of it to be sure u dont run out. maybe get one nice bottle of skotch or something for u and ur bro and a few friends late night just chill and drink.

Re: Need alchohol suggestions, brother coming home from Iraq
Crown and Ginger is a pretty smooth combo as well.

I swear I have nothing against people that buy expensive Vodka, just that I believe and many others believe that they have been sucked into to a myth that is perpetuated by big business, Manhattan hipsters and a few snooty spirit critics. You are paying for the bottle! |
Re: Need alchohol suggestions, brother coming home from Iraq
the difference is not in taste but in quality. thousand of people die every day from bad quality vodka

I guess that’s just me though. |

dude what are you blabbering about
ppl die from bad milk and stuff. |
Re: Need alchohol suggestions, brother coming home from Iraq
ne14dirt is correct in that the differences between a medium vodka and a premium vodka are probably too subtle for most people to appreciate. I'm going to guess that your brother hasn't had neither time nor opportunity to develop a discerning palate for the subtleties of vodka, so spending upwards of $30 a bottle seems like a waste to me. If he was somewhat of a vodka snob before he went to Iraq, matters change, and the argument for going after a pricey brand to show appreciation for your brother can, of course, also be made.
Anyway, my main concern here is the scotch. Unless you know he's had some experience with scotch, do not go for an Islay whiskey such as Laphroaig or Lagavulin. Some beginners get the taste for smokey/peaty whiskeys right away, but it'll be a gamble on your part. Usually, it takes some time to develop an appreciation for Islay whiskeys. My current favorite whiskey in the 'affordable' price range is Oban, 14 yo. There's a definite element of peat and smoke to it, but not too much to throw off a beginner. A more conservative choice is the Glenlivet 12 yo, or even the 18 yo if you want to step it up a bit. These are some of the best balanced whiskeys you'll get. Oh, and for the love of God, don't buy Jack Daniels! The horror! |
Re: Need alchohol suggestions, brother coming home from Iraq
Perhaps it is time to restate the MrWookie Vodka-Ass Rule:
Increase the quality of your vodka until it no longer tastes like ass. At that point, they all pretty much taste the same and advertising budgets take over. This line is found at the level of Fris/Rain, or $18/bottle. |
Re: Need alchohol suggestions, brother coming home from Iraq
There is a tujonfree absinth comming out in the states (lucid). I dont know if its any good but absinth is something that all of my american friends wanted to try.
When i visited the states i didnt liked the american beer at all. If you can get a hold of german and other european beer in the usa you could get some. there is a huge variety of european beers and if your brother likes beer you should definetly get some. |
