I was going to suggest:

Pick a very untraveled, preferably unmarked dirt road in Death Valley. Drive to the end (bring your 4WD). Hike about 30 minutes in some random direction into the hills/mountains off of any trail. Read. Don't forget your personal ELT.

But driving four hours and hiking an hour to read for a couple hours may be a bit much. Dunno why, but I get a certain kick out of knowing I'm the only human in a 10 mile radius.

I did that this past weekend at Valley of Fire. I loved it so much that I drove through out the other end thinking I'd sit by the edge of Lake Mead. Nobody bothered to tell me that there is no "edge" that far north. I was hungry and drove all the way south to Lake Las Vegas to get food, by that time I drove home because i was too tired to read. Oh well [img]/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

Mike - I love your wetlands idea, I have never been there before, I'll check it out very soon. But where do you go to read at night? You of all people should be filled with good advice for places to read!

I find it hard to read at a pool, too distracting. I want to get in the water and it gets too hot/too cold/too windy. I have a pool on my roof, I dont like reading there.

If it was after 2AM, I used to read in the coffee shop at the Gold Coast. They'd ask me if I wanted smoking or non-smoking and I'd respond that I wanted quiet so that I could read. There's a room towards the rear with a bunch of booths that they use when they're busy, but during slow periods it's only used for overflow of breaking employees. If you're polite and they like you, they'll let you sit there.

The thing is...service will be slow. Order everything you could possibly want in one shot. Tip handsomely.

Haven't been there in a few years, so things may have changed.

About the only thing that has changed is they no longer allow smoking.

GC update
 

I was in the Gold Coast last week trying to hook up with the Spring Mountain game. Went by the coffee shop around midnight. They were having, of all things, karaoke in the little nightclub next door. Completely unsuitable for reading, even in the furthest corner of the coffee shop.
