Definition of \"protected pot\" please

I was getting a hand reviewed by Leader and didn't want to waste valuable coaching time in asking during our session so I thought I'd ask here. In this hand he said that villain raised in a protected pot. What does that mean exactly?

Re: Definition of \"protected pot\" please

Generally, a protected pot is a multi-way pot such that it's "protected" from bluffs (people feel that with so many players in the hand, someone is sure to have a hand they're willing to call with).

I may be limiting my definition too much, but I use the term to describe multi-way pots where one player is already all-in and the balance of the pot cannot be claimed without showing down the best hand.

Re: Definition of \"protected pot\" please

A protected pot is a pot with a lot of other players in it, or a pot with a player in it that has shown aggression or interest in the pot. when someone bets into a "protected" pot, it usually means that person has a real hand and is not worried that it is protected. Of course, it doesn't always have to mean that. but generally, you don't want to bluff into a protected pot.

OK, thanks. Here is basically what happened. It's a 3/6 limit 6max BTW.

Hero is in BB w J [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]J [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

UTG raises,2 fold, button calls,SB folds

*** FLOP *** [4d Ah 5s]
Hero bets, UTG calls, button raises

My coach said,

"Fold the flop. When someone raises in a protected pot like this on an A-high flop, you’re hand is no good a very large portion of the time. "
