Razz -- worst hand wins on Absolute

I have seen many beginning players ask what hand beats what in razz, but when online sites get it wrong it's just brutal. This is a showdown from a hand a friend of mine played on Absolute the other day. Luckily it was only for microstakes (as if they ever spread even a mid stakes razz game there), but I wanted to warn any players who play there!

*** SUMMARY ***
Total Pot($2.35) | Rake ($0.10)
Seat 1: Villain won Total ($2.25) with 7,5,4,4,2 [4s 2h 7s 5d 4d 5s 4c - P:2h,B:4c,B:4d,B:5d,B:7s]
Seat 2: Hero lost with 9,7,3,A,A [Ac 9s 7c 3s Ad 3h 9h -
P:Ac,B:Ad,B:3h,B:7c,B:9h]

Is this "Hero lost with..." part an actual quote from the site? Seems bizarre as, even if the program thought a pair of aces was high, then hero could make a better hand with a pair of 3s by ditching an Ace and a 9, and then would still beat the villian's pair of 4s.

I would certainly suggest your friend write to Absolute to get this bug fixed.

Obv the HH didn't say "hero", but I just substituted hero and villain for the screen names and the rest is copied directly from the site HH. He did email support and I'll update this thread when I get hear what answer they give him.

FWIW I think the bug is probably only in the last step of hand evaluation, where the SW has computed each player's best hand correctly and then compares them. My guess would be that it ranks a lone ace as low, but still ranks a pair of AA as high.

To me the way the site is showing the hands is screwed up. I would show hero's hand as AA 973 and villain's hand as 44 752. I can't remember if this is how FT shows it or not. Actually I think if there is a pair FT just says a "pair of aces" and doesn't show the 5 card hand.

Here is his reply from support. Warning: please be sitting upright before reading this as it may cause vomiting into the mouth.

Dear Mr. Rake donator ,

Thank you for contacting us.

Razz is 7 Card Stud where the best low hand wins. As in regular 7 Card
Stud, every player is dealt a total of seven cards, three of them face
down, and the other four face up.

A low hand must be five un-paired cards (with the highest card no
greater than an 8). According to hand # 744577709, your best low hand was
(9,7,3,A,A) however your opponent had(7,5,4,4,2) therefore he won the
hand.

He referred them to me for confirmation that they're full of crap. Hopefully they will email me, and I can get in a few good body blows. Then I'll unleash the forces of 2p2 for the knockout punch

Inasmuch as I am at work and can't acces Absolute Poker's web site, do the rules for Razz at AP actually state this regarding "un-paired cards" and "highest card no greater than an 8?"

Obviously (I guess), AP is entitled to make up their own rules for Razz or any other game they deal, but if these are the posted rules, then they have violated their own rules, inasmuch as both hands have paired cards in them. Therefore, it seems to me that the pot either must be chopped, or the hand declared void and all money contributed to the pot is returned to the respective players.

Regardless, the program for Razz still has a bug in it if it declared your friend's hand the loser.
