munchen or vienna

hi everyone, sorry for posting this in english... i am a romanian poker pro (nl hu 2/4 - 5/10 )and i'm trying to decide where to move - either vienna or munchen. could you give me some advice please? how do the cities compare in terms of finding a flat to rent for example, especially for me as a poker pro with no real job or proof of a stable income ? can i just pay the rent in advance for 3-6 months? do people speak english or french? do authorities give you trouble if you're a foreigner, you live in a nice area and spend money without having a visible income ( i'm not into drugs or anything illegal that would give them a reason to target me) ? has anyone here been to both these cities, how would you compare them? cheers and thanks for any help in advance.

forget munich. It`s the hell expensive there ( rent home and such stuff). Vienna also not cheap but 2 big card casinos there. And of course a very nice city. With english you should be understand almost everywhere in munich and vienna.

vienna and munich are both nice cities.

But since you`re from Romania, i believe that vienna should be your choice, since many people from south east europe - thus, also from your home country -live there.
In addition to that u got the mentioned card rooms there with very juicy cash\donkament games in case u wanna play some live poker.
I guess that u dont care, if the rent is +- a few hundos, but i assume that it can be pretty tough to get an appartment without any proof of income. Just hope for the best that people believe that u got $$$, when you flip over 20 purple euros^^. PM me, if u need help on the legal stuff with appartments.

thanks for the replies. first of all the last thing i want to see is more romanians, i'm trying to escape the whole balkan theme so that's not a problem for me at all. the biggest issues are how likely am i to have problems with my online poker activity and how easy is it to get a flat in this situation. i've been reading things about vienna on a few forums and there were stories about the streets being full of vomit in the morning, people spitting and urinating in public... this isn't how i imagine beautiful vienna or austrians. i mean if i want to see things like that i can stay here. are these stories true? do they happen in the nice parts of the city? on the other hand, i've read only good things about munchen http://www.monocle.com/sections/affa...ies-01-Munich/ and the pics i've seen are just unreal... i mean there doesn't seem to be one particle of dust on the streets, not one graffiti and so on. it's not grand and imperial like vienna but just adorable. cost of living isn't really that important, neither is nightlife.... clean and safe streets, nice architecture, trees and parks, civil and polite people are the things i care about. oh another thing - does either city have problems with skinheads because i read about a few cases in germany about blacks or indians who were beaten by neo-nazis (i am white and could pass as german/austrian but i'd still want to know ). cheers and thanks again

neither in münchen nor in vienna u ll have problems with neo-nazis. these bastard just live in holes deep in the german east...
i am actually interested why u chose these two cities. think about going to berlin. its no as beautiful as münchen but its nice too and much less expensive.

if u have big problems to find a room/flat i got an idea. if u have a matura/abitur/anything equal u could also enrol at a german university and u could get a room at a dorm (some dorms have single appartments). besides that if u tell people ur a student its prolly easier for u to get a flat. romanian poker pros are not excatly the kinda renter most people wanna rent their flats to.

Maybe you should think about some "smaller" cities ( which are easily can have more than 100k citizen). There are enough nice places in germany or austria where you find what you search. Also there it should easier to rent a home and doing the administration things than in the XXL-cities.

Vienna:
It's the gate to the south east in Europe, and it probably becomes even more important since the EU "expands" to Eastern Europe.
I was on vacation in Vienna for one week at the beginning of October. The city seems to be nice, maybe not that clean (especially compared to Munich), but it's not dirty. I havent seen vomit or something on the street, this might be the case in some districts, but i guess not everywhere.
The nightlife isnt that great imo, not much going on.
I dont know much about the people, i just know my aunt, and she's friendly .
My uncle lives in Vienna and he really likes the city. I think it's not a bad choice to move there.
Pokerwise: Vienna >>>>>>>>>>>>&g t;>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>&g t;> Munich.

Munich:
My dad worked there for 2 years, and we visited him a few times. I really like Munich, it's probably the best big city in Germany.
They have a lot of nice restaurants, run by the beer breweries, with traditional food, which i like a lot.
The city is extremely clean, at least that's my impression.
The "English Garden" is a nice calm place to hang out, and fits your search of a park.
The nightlife is also pretty good.
There are a lot of things to say about Munich, many things I dont know about.

If I was you, I'd prefer Munich over Vienna.
You said, you play NL HU, so your bankroll isnt too small i guess. If that's the case you should be able to afford both cities, but Munich is much more expensive than Vienna.
Regarding racism, I think both cities dont have that many problems with it, I dont know about Vienna, but Munich is not a "No-Go-Area" like some parts in the east of Germany.
Both Munich and Vienna have a social-democratic majors, but Bavaria as a state is very conservative.

That's all I know about the two cities. But I advice you to visit both cities and find out about it yourself. It's probably the best way to get an impression.

I live in Vienna and you see such things maybe in the first district. But of course just near the bars.

Re: munchen or vienna

thanks for all the info , mates, great replies.

first of all i've never played live poker but i looked into in since you mentioned it. it seems there's one top notch casino in vienna but stakes are very low for live games and the rake is insane , plus i would probably be bored out of my mind playing 40 hands an hour. there are other reasons i wouldn't like live poker but not worth mentioning, basically it's not for me.. at least at this point in my poker ''career''.

the living costs are not a problem as long as i can withdraw money without getting in trouble. from what i've gathered one huge advantage austria has over germany is that online poker is legal( some say it's taxed, others say it isn't ...) while in germany it's not legal( but i am told nobody cares and nobody pays taxes) . can you give me some opinions on that? how do you handle yourself as a german poker pro? how do you withdraw money? i usually use moneybookers since neteller is not available in romania and i'm still not sure about epass since they can't seem to be able to give me a straight answer. would i be fine withdrawing from mb to a german bank account? what limits should i have to stay under the radar? could i get audited for something like this? what do you tell people you do for a living? can there be any problems with laws or taxes?

why is everyone saying munich is far more expensive on all the lists i've found vienna is much higher http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0933749.html

one last thing - any pros here from munich ?

cheers, mates

ps: about berlin - i guess it doesn't seem like my kind of city, from things i've heard and seen. i am not sure i could register as a student in germany, i dropped out of college years ago and have no intention to go back... i didn't even get my high school diploma from them, they still have it lol .

Well, I was born and still live in Munich, so I'd have to vote for Munich;) Vienna is a beautiful city as far as I know from a short trip. I really think you should take a short trip to both cities and decide for yourself.

If you wanna get some pointers for a night around town, just drop me a PM.

Btw, Munich has the lowest crime rate of all german cities.

Sorry for chiming in a bit late, but - if I understand the information given on the website of the Bundesministerium für Finanzen, the section on Glückspiel says that playing online poker is not legal in Austria - but that live games are allowed if the place arranging it does not make a profit from it. Is that somewhat correct? (My deutsch is not very good)

So, if the above information is correct, and I guess someone will correct me if it's not, I would think that it could be a problem if you are not listed with a job and yet live in a nice place and have enough money on your spending account etc. - that's surely something the tax department could pick up on and start asking questions about, or what?
