Basic 5-10 NL Question: Small Pairs
 

In a 5-10 NL game, where everyone has $1000, what is the correct play with small pairs UTG?

Depends on the game.

Against good opponents (ie aggressive PF and can fold postflop) fold almost always, and raise occasionally.

Against poor opponents (ie passive pre and postflop) you can setmine.

OK, then when do I play them against average brick and mortar opponents?

If UTG limps, do I limp in second position with 22?

if brick and morter, raise or call, just dont fold.

So the problem with limping UTG with 22 every time is that I will get raised too often preflop, too much $ preflop, or that I won't get paid off if I hit my set?

btw, my response was meant for full-ring. In 6-max I play every pair, and raise every hand I open with.

If the first guy limps, limping behind is standard.

In B&M 5/10 I would never fold a pocket pair in an unraised pot, since players are so bad and stacks are usually deeper.

The two problems are related.

If you are playing exclusively for set value, you'll have to win at least $600 every time you hit your set if you are limp-calling a $50 raise preflop (accounting for the times you get set v. set or sucked out some other way).

This just isn't going to happen against good opponents, out of position, especially since a late position raiser could have anything.

I play exclusively in a brick and mortar game against bad opponents. I've made mucho playing limit hold'em and omaha, but I'm relatively new to NL. I'm trying to figure out the correct preflop strategy at this point. Any general advice?
