This depends on the country to which you're traveling. There are some countries where, if you want to enter only on your passport (or on a tourist visa, for countries that require tourist visas), you have to prove that you have a return ticket out of the country. This is to discourage people entering as "tourists" and then not leaving.

If you call your destination country's local consulate, they should be able to tell you what the policy is.

IME they're a ripoff. Whenever I've tried to buy a one-way ticket, it was more expensive than a two-way. That's right, the one-way would be like $900 vs. $500 TOTAL for BOTH LEGS.

I know it's against airline regulations and all, but f em.

It really depends on the country that you're flying into.

I know the feeling, Dale.

Trying to get to America from Europe one way. Round-trip was about $1000 and one-way was $4000.

My understanding is that airlines are on the hook for paying for the ticket out of the country if they fly someone in who doesn't have a return ticket.
