What is a \"cooler\"?

What is a "cooler"? I've seen it mentioned in the SSNL Forum.

When you have a big hand, figure you can't be beat, then...bam. You're beat.

*example*, you flop a king high spade flush, board doesn't pair, no more spades, etc. Only one hand can beat you, you think you have it made. Bam, somebody has ace high flush and was just milking you. COOOOOLER.

Re: What is a \"cooler\"?

Suppose you flop a set and someone flops a higher set, that's a cooler.
Or you flop a boat, but they flopped quads.

Or you're drawing to the river and hit the nut flush, and someone has the straight flush.

Situations where most of your money is going in behind, but there's no way you get away from it (the odds of him having the better hand is so low).

Differentiated from bad beat. In a beat, your money is going in ahead, and they hit one of their few outs to win. In a cooler, you're behind, but there's no (rational) reason to think you're behind.

Re: What is a \"cooler\"?

As with many poker terms over the decade, the term has been misused so often that the meaning has changed.

Originally it meant a cold deck. Not today's "cold deck" that doesn't give you any good cards, but a stacked deck meant to cheat you. So you would be given a very good hand (second nuts), but be beaten. Ace flush vs straight flush. Top full house vs quads.

So when newer players got beat holding an excellent hand, they borrowed the term 'cooler'.

Re: What is a \"cooler\"?

From perspective of A, if he was betting all along:
Huge beat, the guy was drawing to 1 out on the River.
If he waited until the River to start betting, it's just bad play. Maybe a cooler (but he has only himself to blame).

Oober, that's not really a cooler. A cooler would be if sxysuzy had 22

that would be a cooler to sxysuzy right? she couldnt really put him on 10 8... she easily would have thought she had the best hand and i would also in the same predicament.
