Dual Core..Quad Core..FSB..
 

I'm about to buy a new PC. I have a couple priced out. I am going to be using this for poker/multi tasking. No real games. But I do a lot of [censored]. 4-5 different poker clients, PAHUD, PT, AIM, mIRC, Firefox, etc all open simultaneously all the time.

Right now it's boiling down to 2 different setups.

1 Quad Core..2.4ghz 8MB Cache 1066FSB
4 GB RAM - 800 mhz


It will be 1329+Tax

The other one is a

Dual Core 2.33mhz.1333 FSB. 4MB Cache
4 GB 667mhz RAM

And it comes out to like 979+Tax.


Are the upgrades worth it?

I would say only if you intend to REALLY be using the computer...meaning do you really need to be running 4 things at once that all are quite responsive?

However, if you can afford the quad core, get 'er.

mmm quad core... most of those programs (except PT) shouldn't stress the proc, you just need plenty of RAM. Although if you're likely to fireup another processor intensive task, like ripping a CD, you'd do well to get the quad core.

Also if you run a Postgre DB with PT it will use multiple cores, so you should see an improvement with the quad core system (I personally advocate using a separate computer for the DB).

why not upgrade the ram on the dual core to 800mhz?

don't do that system then. That's weird to not max out ram speed on a system when it's a very small price difference.
