The early word is that if you want to play poker only, the place to be is still Motorcity.

Motorcity has become a circus.

check my post from Tuesday. Motor City hasn't been as bad since Tues. Perhaps they'll add more tables. That would be nice.

I am really wondering if MGM's poker room will be around for more than a year. I understand that the music gets pretty loud outside the poker room. I haven't been there to play, but that's what I've heard.

You mean like in loud music, which may "disturb" the poker players? The music is provided for persons who keep the place profitable -- not the poker players.

Played there today.
Couple observations:
1) Casino is great! Beautiful, spacious, well thought out.
2) Card room blows! MCC is still the place, as mentioned above. I will say there is potential but there needs to be changes made YESTERDAY.
Buddy and I went to play today -- walked in and asked what they were spreading. Floor says, what do you want to play? We laugh and say, no what are you spreading? He replies the same, so I said how about a Roundy-by-round or PLO. He said: I've got 50-200 (1/2 NL), 100-300 (2-5NL) and starting a list for 300, no max (5/10NL). We took a seat at the 50-200 (no wait) and I proceeded to see some of the worst dealing I've ever seen in my life.
Average hands/down was about 8, yes 8 hands in a half-hour (last down we had 6 hands). Witnessed somebody pay $10 for their $2 blind; a flop of 345 and the dealer say "possible straight on the board"; and just lots and lots of dealer errors. My buddy and I just laughed and tried mightly to follow action and help. Had to explain to the dealers about dead buttons, people needing to post big blind every orbit, how to make side-pots etc.
WITH all of that said, room isn't bad. It is small and will hopefully expand. The floor staff seemed very interested in making the room work. When I pulled them aside to talk about what I was seeing at the table they seemed concerned and wanting to fix it.
I do hope they get these things fixed and some of the games switch from MCC to MGM. The room is cleaner and has potential to be nicer.
Oh yeah, to say the fish were swimming is an understatment! There were 3 at my table who had NEVER played in a casino before. There was some sickly sweet action happening.

Yesterday I heard that on Friday night they only had 4 tables going! Can anyone confirm or deny?

Can not comment on Fri -- Saturday @ 8:30 they had all tables full and a list of about 23 for 50-200 and about 10 on the other lists (including a couple of interest lists?)

Re: NEW MGM IN DETROIT

I played there this past Thursday and Saturday. Yes, some of the dealers are slow, but they will improve. Some of the dealers and even management are new to poker, but I think it will get better over time. I really love the room and the action was phenominal, especially at the 2/5 NL game. 1/2 NL was definitely more fishy than MCC, due in part to a lot of people wanting to check out the casino and play some poker. I don't think this will last, but right now it is a bit softer. The issue with music is really only late at night on weekends. There is a bar right next door and if you are sitting close to it, it can be a bit distracting. But other poker rooms tend to be next to clubs accross the country, so this is nothing new. The rake, I believe is the same at MCC, and as of now there are no plans for a BBJ, which is fine with me.

It will be interesting to see how things will be like in another six months or a year. This past weekend the place with packed with people coming and going. The list was insanely deep and there was a line just to get on the elevator because of the nightclub. Alot of tourists and people from MCC were checking it out, and from what I heard, several MCC regulars will now make MGM their home, including myself. So we will see....only time will tell.
