A few questions about \"running it twice\"

This hand isn't from HSNL, but I figured higher stakes players would know the answers to these questions. The following hand came up in a live game last night and the conversation followed:

$1/$3 NL -
Me $450
Villain $400

I raise OTB to $11 with 69c
Villain (LAG) calls in SB
Flop is 652r
Villain checks
I bet out $16
Villain raises to $50
I re-raise to $125
Villain pushes
I call in a shot
(now, before you flame, we'd been playing together for 7 hours and I had a pretty good read on him throughout so I knew I was good for now)

He flips over 54s and asks if I want to run it twice.

So, here are my questions, b/c I've never been in a game where you've been able to do that.

- Am I correct in my understanding that if you do run it 2x, if you each win one time, you split the pot and if one guy wins both he wins the whole thing?

- Is there an advantage, mathematically, to either player?

- Should I have agreed?

Any help is appreciated. Turns out I said yes (pretty stupid since I don't completely understand the process). I won the first one and he won the second. Would have been an $800 my way....

Thanks.

1. Yes

2. No, none at all.

3. This is done simply to reduce variance, so if that is for you then you should agree...

Unless I'm playing with my case money or am involved with a bad player that I like to keep happy, I would never run it twice.

The EV is exactly the same.

Quite often it is good for the game (or bad for the game) if you run it twice so it depends on that I guess.

Thanks for the responses. That's what I figured, but I wanted to check it out. When you all play live higher stakes games, do they do it often?

Don't underestimate how much goodwill you can build up at the table by doing little things. By running it twice or chopping, you become one of the 'good guys' at the table, which can be great later in the session.

I'd only run it twice if i'd rather have less variance. and i'd be more likely to do it against a regular than against a fish, because that might be the best chance you have at the fish's stack. plus, if he gets lucky and doubles up, whatever.

[/ QUOTE ]It's good for the game likes on HSP where they can keep the fish (helmuth, farha, eli) from going broke too fast, but keeps the happy. If it's at your local 1/2NL club, it's just a big [censored] waste of time of since everyone is on their case money practically and they enjoy gambling and running it twice will make people want to gamble less (b/c of how slow it's taking). There's a reason why online poker sites don't offer any tables of "running it x times", b/c they know it's a waste of time and money.

I've wondered about this... what if you only have 1 out and hit it the first time?
