seeing this expression recently with regards to no-limit...

in one instance, it seemed to be similar to "call to bluff" i.e. call and see if you can take the pot away on the next street if you're opponent checks..... is that correct? and i also wondered if it has a more general meaning ("just see what happens")

That's exactly what it is.

You call a flop bet with a weak/marginal holding intending to bet the next street of villian just checks.

Idea is that it's cheaper to find out if you are beat against some opponents who won't fire again than raising the flop.

There is a chapter on this in NLHT&P but I don't remember if they actually use the term 'float' or not.

niedam, thanks..... NLTP is where i got "call to bluff" from. don't know if they were first, but first for me.
