Marketing websites...looking for advice

I'm setting up a new website/service soon. It will be a live music directory. I dont want to go into too much details, but I am pretty confident that the idea itself is really really good. It definitely has the potential to become popular, and it's something imo that is 'needed'.

I have an awareness of marketing, and a rough idea of what works and what doesn't. But I'm looking for some valuable resources that cover the details. I need to know HOW to market my site, and how to give it the best chance at succeeding.

Books? Websites? Blogs? Anything is welcome!

Also if you have a background in marketing, I'd love to hear any bits of advice you might have.

Regards
Cian

I just bought a book called Punk Marketing, which is basically all about viral and grassroots marketing. I'm only on the first chapter, so I have no idea how helpful it is, but you might want to check it out in the bookstore. It has nothing to do with punk music, fyi, it's just referring to the attitude...

Cool thanks I'll have a look. If your reading that, you may be interested in 'Beyond Disruption'. It's not web-specific though which is more what I'm looking for.

Cool, thanks. I actually work on the creative end of advertising, but I am interested in learning the business end...

OP and any others interested - I've been doing some light web marketing for the last 6 years on the side.

I'm not super strong in any one area, but I have background in PPC advertising, search engine optimization, affiliate programs, guerilla marketing, and a bunch more.

PM me or IM me on AOL (z28dreams) and I'd be glad to answer any questions.

I'd also be interested in hearing from anyone that would like to partner on sites.

Also, for book suggestions, the 2 popular authors I've read lately are Seth Godin (unleashing the idea virus and others) and Doug Hall (jump start your marketing / business brain ).

Both had some cool examples and are worth a read, but are also kind of generic. Still might help get your creative juices stirring.

Throw a "get out of jail" party for Paris.

This is sort of hacky, and you'd still need the know-how to generate interest, coverage, etc. And it has nothing to do with live music.
