Drink driving offence in UK
 

I got done for drink driving a couple days ago,
was a bit over the limit.
I hit into two cars and caused some damage to my car, and the other two.

I have a fully comp UK lisence and my insurance claims they are not liabe to cover costs for my car, and maybe even the other 2. ( so called "grey area")
I will contact a solicitor very soon, most likely, but am interested if anyone here has experienced this and what the outcome was.
Or if anyone knows anything about what the insurers are liable for?

If I were an insurer or owned a road (see my location) I would have zero tolerance for drunk drivers. It's just so dumb. Not sure why this is politics, I propose Iron move it to OOT so op can get NT'd

Are you posting here in the hope that it will sidetrack into a debate on either DUI regulation or those mean insurance companies?

Don't expect to get anything from your insurance if the damage was caused by breaking the law. I, for one, certainly hope you don't get anything aside from a revoked license.

it is very standard for car insurance policies to exclude drink driving situations.


similarly, you can't get life insurance for suicide.



if you deliberately and massively increase the risk of liability, why would you expect someone else to cover it? it is quite reasonable for insurers to refuse to take the risk of bloody idiots.

It all depends on what it says in the contract you agreed to with your insurer. I have never heard of an insurance company that does not include a clause where they don't pay if you're drunk when you wreck your car.

If you did want a policy that included drunk driving, or maybe a clause that paid if your BAC < X where X is over the limit, I expect that the premium would be extremely high.

Put yourself in the position of the insurer, if you were insuring someone, would you want to pay if they crashed while driving drunk?

If you were a good person you would not fight this in court because you are wrong and people who get all litigious in these circumstances only cause premiums to be higher for everyone.

I always feel like I'm missing out on the fun when I see this. Why not just ban the bozos, publicly note it, and leave their droppings as an example to others?
