Led Zeppelin Complete Recordings Box Set Gripe

I picked up the LZ "complete studio recordings" box set. It's good - just the studio albums with no B sides - but I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't try to clean up some of the recordings. For example, Bonzo's squeaky bass pedal is still there in The Ocean and other tracks. The fidelity of LZ III was left unimproved - it still has that slightly underwater sound to it.

Was I wrong to expect "remastered" to mean "cleaned up?"

Do you realize the [censored] storm that would have ensued had someone had the audacity to "clean up" Led Zeppelin?

I love that squeaky bass pedal. It somehoe brings you into the studio. Hard to describe. Like when a guitarist is playing guitar, there's a sound, an unintentional sound, that gets made when the fingertip slides down a string. It's not a note, but it makes the music . . . real.

I think (hope) borodog got leveled here.

Jimmy Page does the remastering himself. He spends a shitton of time on it.

Whatever it sounds like, it's exactly how Page wants it to sound. The squeaky bass pedal was purposely miked in the studio, if I recall correctly.

Yes, that is not the definition of remastered. You are thinking of remixing (and even then things like the squeak probably won't go away although it could be masked)

Remastering takes the original analog stereo masters (probably on 1/4" tape, I don't think they had 1/2" master at that period of time but I could be wrong), checks them for phase coherence, provides EQ, compression and balancing across the entire stereo field (in remixing this would occur on the individual tracks that create the stereo mix), and then transfers them to a digital master which will be used to make CDs.

Its not often I am in the lounge, I hope this explanation helps!

What's up with all the ninja bumping? I thought that wasn't allowed in TLDR?

It's not allowed. The bumper and his main account are both banned. I'm not sure why he hit the Lounge, though.

"Coda" wasn't a studio album; its basically an album of B-sides/stuff not good enough for the album they were recorded for.
