I've got a true love for this music and I thought I'd give you guys a quick refresher course on it...

Down-Tempo, Chill, Dream Pop...It's called a lot of different things, but Trip Hop was first formed in the early 90s in England out of what was then called The Bristol Sound. It combined American hip-hop with deep groove drum and bass to present a sound that is both dreamy and danceable at the same time.

Long considered the "masterpiece" of the genre, everybody has heard most of these songs - even if you don't recognize the titles! They're constantly used in movies, TV shows and advertisements.

Really, you've probably heard the whole album without knowing it! This is a great start in discovering Trip hop.

Portishead - Dummy

Portishead is probably best known for their huge mid-90s hit, Sour Times (live), but that would be a shame if you stopped there. Dummy is best described as a film noir soundtrack to a movie that was never made. It's absolutely gorgeous and a work you must listen to from beginning to end.

Loop Guru - shame this band isn't around anymore - hard to describe - I suppose Buddha Bar style chill music with an intense beat.

Some Drum and Bass like LTJ Bukem and his Earth Series. - This guy is the best of the best for "intelligent" Drum and Bass and quite frankly Bukem is probably the only listenable Drum and Bass - very chill....

Now my recs tend more toward chill / electronica but I think Trip Hop by itself is way too limiting.

By the way - if you want to listen to the best internet station for this genre - go to www.somafm.com and tune in to the Groove Salad channel.

portishead and massive attack are the only ones i'm familiar with but they are both very good. massive attack is good live as well.

Don't forget Portishead's self-titled second album. People underrate it because it's not as magical as Dummy, but it's no disappointment by any means.

This is a thread I'm going to be following very closely. Every now and then at a swing dance event when the hour gets past 3 am, a DJ will play a song from this genre that really makes me want to groove. I know little about the music here, and there's definitely some I like.

Ok - I have to put a few more "Electronica" recs on here.

Once again - Mr Dorfmeister's - A Different Drummer Selection - unbelievable downtempo reggae dub dj mix. hard to find already as it's out of print but get it used or from I tunes. (lol - guess it's not that hard to find)

Everything But The Girl - Walking Wounded - This was when they went drum and bass - they were sorta the original Zero 7 if you will.

And one more - Weekend Players - as one review on amazon says... "dreamy electro brit pop" Collaboration between Groove Armada's Andy Cato and left-field jazz/dance singer Rachel Foster - looks like they only made one album but that's not unusual for this genre.

Tipper is one of my favourit DJ's/producers. His Trip-Hop (which he calls Tip-Hop) is sick.
