Examples of why your dad is/was awesome

I'm going to post two. Try and keep em short.

I did something terrible when I was eight. My mum ordered my dad to smack me. Before he came to my room I put a book down my trousers to soften the blow although I didn't know what to expect as I didn't think he would dream of hitting me.
He obviously saw the outline of the book and said 'Aren't you the clever one', smiled proudly and left.

When I was nine and on holiday I found a piece of Amethyst which I still have but now know is totally worthless. He 'bought' it off me for 20. It probably took me two years to spend!

He went to court with me today, and wore baggy khakis, a crappy button down shirt, suspenders, and birkenstocks with black socks (his idea of dressing up).

I wore a suit.

Oh ya, my dad is awesome.

-My dad worked 80-hour weeks for 25 years so that my brothers and I could take trips to Disney and have video game systems and dress in nice clothes.

-He used to drive me to Kindergarten on the back of his motorcycle.

My wife and I laughed at our Dad's respective reactions when we were kids and first noticed the effect that makes it look like the moon is "following" you when you are in a car.

Her dad floored it and said "I bet I can beat it home!"

My dad, once we got home, took out a flashlight, a basketball, and a tennis ball and explained not only parallax, but also the phases of the moon.

My dad is awesome.

Re: Examples of why your dad is/was awesome

Great thread.

My dad immigrated to the US when he was around 22. He didn't understand a lot about our customs, best examples being:

1) he gets pulled over for drinking a beer while driving. Asks the officer why he is being pulled over, in genuine confusion. The office points to the beer. Dad says "OH! You want one? (offers beer)" To his surprise he gets arrested! Oops.

2) My dad loved hunting and nature in general and one day saw a skunk. Apparently skunks look different in Europe than they do here, so he was very intrigued by this "animal" and wanted to check it out. So he somehow incapacitates it and puts it in his trunk. Next stop was a convenience store, his (first) wife goes in, he sees people pointing at her and covering their noses. He said the smell never left the trunk of the car.

3) Dad hits a deer on the highway. The deer falls into some liberal, animal-loving dude's yard. The guy comes out of his house, freaking out about the poor, injured deer. My dad thinks quickly and tells the guy "I'm a medical doctor. I know an excellent vet that I'm going to take this animal to right away. Help me load him in my van - if we hurry we can probably save his life." Dad drives home, deer dies, he slaughters it in the garage and we eat on that thing for a year. It was delicious.

4) He made a habit of procuring horribly profane and offensive bumper stickers. Then, for kicks, he would randomly stick them on unsuspecting people's cars in the parking lot where he worked at the mental health center.

My dad and his brothers allowed their sons to buy into the family business for $25,000. When I sold my shares 7 years later I received $350,000+.

Sweet.

My father was on the cover of some bowling magazne in the 70's for being part of the team that designed the first automated digital scoreboard (the clicky clacky kind, not LED's) for some national bowling tournament in Florida. He's also got a cool mustache.

When I was 6 years old I wanted more than anything in the world to be an Indian Princess. This meant that every Thursday night for a year, my dad sat down on the floor with me and made jewelry with a bunch of other little girls and their long-suffering fathers. He even helped chaperone our camping trip. I painted his face, stuck feathers in his hair, and by and large made him look completely ridiculous, and insisted on being called Pocahontas. He endured it all.

Good thread idea.

My dad said he was thankful for antidepressants this year at thanksgiving and glanced at my grandma.

My dad ran down the escalator at the atlanta airport and tried to stop the doors do not rebound train and got crushed pretty bad even though we were not in any rush.

Actually, that second one is really out of character for him but pretty funny.

My dad cried when I was accepted to dental school and again when I was accepted into an endodontic residency...hes an endodontist.

In spite of all I screwed up he said he always knew that I would turn out OK.

If any family was in trouble he and my Mom were there for them, no questions asked.

When I'd buy a new (used) car, he'd find out from his mechanic friend the most likely problem and make sure I was prepared. For example, I used the replacement ceramic ignition module that he put in my glove box when it went out for no reason at an intersection.

When my best friend disappeared with my car keys after The Who concert, he drove downtown and picked me up.

A million more.

Re: Examples of why your dad is/was awesome

Okay, here are my two:

-When I became a poker player, my dad was immediately my biggest supporter and fan. Everyone else was skeptical, even as I was making a living and slowly moving up the ranks. My mom wasn't completely convinced until my WSOP final table. My dad? As soon as I heard I was making a living (a little over two years ago now) he immediately thought it was the coolest thing ever and started railing me online and asking me how I was doing and arranging trips for us to the casino and stuff. He started reading my poker books and watching it more on TV and asking me about those guys and whatnot.

-Then when I almost died, he was the first person at the hospital and was there for me just about the whole time, even sleeping in his car on occasion when he absolutely had to. I stayed with him for a few months afterward to recover, too, and it was a good place for me to be. I don't think I would have come out okay on the other side if he wasn't around.

I decided to bring him as my guest to next year's Aussie Millions (after he had a death scare of his own) and we had a great time. We didn't have much of a relationship when I was growing up, but now, it's better than ever.

The coolest thing about him, to sum it up, is that he's totally supportive of all of his kids in whatever we do and he roots for us. That goes a long way.

You came into a thread of people celebrating their fathers and made a nitty, negative statement about someone's dad. IMO that is pretty trollish.

Nath,
Now that you mention it, the part about the fall is ringing some bells. Is there a thread where you discuss it more in depth?

didn't mean to rain on everyone's dad parade but if i came in here and was like,

i'm sure someone would say something
