Croquet Trip Report

Today through this weekend, all the prefrosh who got in are visiting my school. While the administration wants to project an image of us as diverse and all-inclusive, those of us already here know that its all upper-class white and preppy. So, we decided that the best course of action to warn all the youngins would be to show off our preppiness by dressing obnoxiously and playing coquet on the lawn nearest where they checked in.

http://photos-n-02.facebook.com/n18/...95372_5763.jpg

To round out the awesomeness, there were also cigars to be had.

http://photos-n-02.facebook.com/n18/...95387_3843.jpg

To make it obvious, I'm the obnoxious looking fat guy in the pink shirt. Fun and intellectual conversation (not really, but we look serious) were had by all

http://photos-n-02.facebook.com/n18/...95375_7166.jpg

And an awesome time was had, even though we looked completely ridiculous to onlookers.

http://photos-n-02.facebook.com/n18/...95382_1227.jpg

Unfortunately, perhaps due to the same thing happening last year, prefrosh check-in was moved to the other side of one of the background buildings above. However, I think we still made an impact. On the other hand, a few students who take themselves way too seriously decided that throwing water balloons at us would be fun. This really put a damper on the mood, but alas, I have no pics to share. In the end, the good guys came out on top: campus police stopped the stocking-masked kids running away and had us give a statement to the dean about the 'attack'.

Good times abound in the newly awesome northeast weather. I hope you all take as much advantage as we did today.

http://photos-n-02.facebook.com/n18/...95379_9690.jpg

edit to add: Note also that I had never played before. Croquet is awesome; kind of like golf, but more strategic, less skillful, shorter timewise, more social, and just generally awesome.

My bro and I used to have fierce home croquet matches on our front lawn when we were younger.

I wish I had the presence of mind to wear a popped collar, plaid shorts and aviators back when I was 11.

not that it works so well in jersey, but somehow I doubt the ability of anyone to pull that style off in cali

Two critiques:

1. You should be wearing boating shoes instead of flip-flops.
2. Brown people?

Ed,

I love it. As someone who spent a lot of time in Princeton when I was growing up, you guys are an amazing parody of typical Princetonians. It's still weird for me to drive through town, see you dorks walking around, and realize that I'm older than you now As someone who has done some partying at Princeton, I know what happens to those outfits when the sun goes down, baby!

i have not made my mind up about her looks, the photos are unclear... more photos? your opinion?

what i don't understand is there didn't seem to be much drinking involved... how can you pull a stunt like this w/o a few kegs scattered around the lawn? it's very posh... really.

Also, Ed is awesome.

Also, my freshman year roommate actually dressed like that every day, and he totally wasn't kidding. So did another of my roommates, come to think of it.

Ed, very well done. I didn't quite get it when you told me to look for a croquet trip report with people in ridiculous clothes, but you pulled it off pretty well imo.

I like the way you think, though open container laws and Princeton cops both blow hardcore.

I think the key here may be investment in flasks.

I'm not sure what is going on in the picture. Why are the minorities not holding your clubs and serving arnold palmers?

That chick in the yellow dress looks kind of hot...but again I can't tell.

I can't believe anyone actually owns a powder blue suit. That is crazy.

At my alma mater, the only Varsity sports we had were rowing, fencing, and croquet. So I'm qualified to give you an A+ on the style, but a C- for lack of Boonesfarm.

Amusingly the only people I know who currently play croquet are some of my parents uber hippy friends.

To clarify, that isn't a blue suit. White pants + seersucker blazer. The point was for no one watching to realize it, right? Anyway, we were, but somehow I think these other guys across the field were being serious:
