It's another norcal/ Socal cultural split. People from Socal refer to freeways as "the 5," "the 10," etc. People from norcal would say "5," "10" because they have no souls.

How could you NOT refer to a freeway with "the" in front of it? The numerical reference is replacing the noun "freeway". You don't say, "Take freeway east to freeway south." You say, "Take THE freeway east..." So, we are still showing that we're the smartest people in the country by saying "Take the 10 east to the 215 North to the 30 East to get to my house" (by the way, that is the actual directions)

Passaman, by your logic, "I killed the Pope" becomes "I killed the Benedict XVI" because the name reference is replacing the noun "Pope."

"101", "280", "85" is talking about a specific freeway. No definite article.
