Poker on Thanksgiving (LC)

So, I'm just curious about this since Full Tilt has a $163 buy-in $50K Gtd KO tourney at 17.00 EST today. I know we're all degens, but who plays poker on Thanksgiving? It's just an ordinary Thursday for me and I know little about your traditions, but isn't 17 EST like when the whole family gathers around the table for turkeys and [censored]? If so, this tournament could basically be a battle for us Europeans who don't celebrate Thanksgiving? Or do you just excuse yourselves and bring your plate to the computer?

Thanksgiving day is the day where the largest number of Americans play poker.

So it's actually an obsolete tradition and should be renamed to Online Poker Day? Alright, I just thought this was one of the few days you should be spending with your family and relatives.

I work as a poker dealer in a casino and I can honestly say that Thanksgiving is one of the busiest days of the year without any special events going on.

I don't think that has ever stopped anyone before. I thought this was America and you could do what you want? On topic though, I will be spewing money in 6-max today with the hope that someone at my table spews more.

I'll prob never be able to play it b/c my family is massive and I won't be able to get away. Too bad as that tourney has "value town" written all over it.

I suggest everyone read the first 3(maybe 2) chapters of A People's History of the United States of America, by professor Howard Zinn. Helps to even out the sanitized version almost all of you get in school of the Pilgrim's in the beginnings of the foundation of this country.

I'm not doing math problems. It's just kind of crazy how romantic a view we've taken on what can essentially only be described as genocide and much of the public has no real idea.

Are you questioning that the underpinnings of thanksgiving are based almost solely in myth rather then fact? You hinted at this fact earlier in this thread too, are you leveling me?

It likely hasnt changed much since then either. Its a really easy read as far as books on history go. There is an anthology called "Voices" which is an addendum to the book and features some more modern day essays. The book as a whole is sort of a mind [censored] as it really turns what you are taught in school on its head.

Re: Poker on Thanksgiving (LC)

I just looked at the online library. Ordered the People's History, saw the others, too. I already knew the history "we" were taught was a pretty f'd up version. It's sad that that remains true still.

from Wikipedia:

Writing in the Washington Post Book World, reviewer Michael Kammen, a professor of American History at Cornell, wrote: "I wish that I could pronounce Zinn's book a great success, but it is not. It is a synthesis of the radical and revisionist historiography of the past decade. . . Not only does the book read like a scissors and paste-pot job, but even less attractive, so much attention to historians, historiography and historical polemic leaves precious little space for the substance of history. . . . We do deserve a people's history; but not a singleminded, simpleminded history, too often of fools, knaves and Robin Hoods. We need a judicious people's history because the people are entitled to have their history whole; not just those parts that will anger or embarrass them. . . . If that is asking for the moon, then we will cheerfully settle for balanced history."

I love Christmas and I am a Christian hating, church despising atheist.

But it a holiday can starts with a line like "No honey, I never slept with anyone. The pregnacy must be a gift from god" and Joey Boy buys it..... why not a holiday that starts with a little ethnic clensing?

All that matters is "What does it mean to YOU...NOW..." Oh and the history..and the food and the presents...........
