Angels Sign Torii Hunter - 5 years $80M

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3123200

He's 32 years old. Discuss.

Edit: I looked at about half the first page and didn't see an MLB Offseason thread, but now I see that it's pretty far down there. Oops. Mods feel free to delete this and put something in that thread if you feel like it.

I really don't get this. What are they going to do with GMJ now?

Congratulations Angels, you now have 9 years and $122 million tied up in a pair of 32+ center fielders. How much money do they have to just throw around?

Wow this one would be bad if it was 1 year 16m, as it is it's just shocking.

right now the White Sox are real pissed and are now lookin at Andruw Jones and Aaron Rowand harder

SuperUberBob 11-22-2007 04:27 AM

Re: Angels Sign Torii Hunter - 5 years $80M

I thought for sure they'd try to get Andruw Jones and move him to right or left field.

Whatever though. 16M/year for a past his prime CF is sick. What a year to be a free agent.

I feel like just by avoiding retarded contracts like this I could be bettter than most GMS.
Quick random note I remember when the Jays signed AJ burnett for 55 mill for 5 years a lot of ppl said how awful it was. Given how much prices have gone up the past few years anyone signed like 2005 or earlier is an incredible bargain.

of course, we'll be saying this in a couple years about this deal.

the problem will be that you still got torii hunter for his 32-36 seasons

I love being a Twins fan who couldn't afford this deal. My gut says he's going to be pretty pathetic the last couple years of this deal. And I hope Angels fans don't expect him to perform next year like he did this past year, his career year. And lol at this being the bat to put behind Vlad to protect him.

Are the Angels just insane? This deal is only arguably not insane if the team has a gaping hole in CF and there are no other options...and the Angels have 2 CFs and there are several free agents that are approximately as good of bets as hunter unsigned.

Does Juan Rivera just suck or what? This may make sense if the Angels plan on shipping GMJ + others for another player, but I don't know otherwise.

Re: Angels Sign Torii Hunter - 5 years $80M

The Angels must be plannning to have Anderson and Guerrero spend about 1/2 their time at DH. I think Matthews will be moving mostly between LF and RF while the big hitters stay healthy in the DH slot.

ive noticed in baseball guys seem to put nice numbers before they become a free agent. hunter and posada are probably both juiced hoping to land a big deal this.

Re: Angels Sign Torii Hunter - 5 years $80M

myth, GM's just don't ridiculously overpay for the players that had bad "contract years", so it's more of a confirmation bias.

Huh, I seem to remember there being a study by some Sabermetric type people a while back that said that free-agents to be did, in fact, put up better numbers when entering a contract year. My half-assed Google search was fruitless though. Does anyone know what I'm talking about or am I an idiot?

Re: Angels Sign Torii Hunter - 5 years $80M

Players are more likely to get hurt or put up better numbers.

how many 36 year old catchers put up, by far, their best career numbers. posada juiced = highly likely. not much to lose. i dont blame him for doing it.

Who would you rather have

Tori Hunter, at 32 , for 5 years at 16M per

or

Vernon Wells, turns 29 in a few weeks, for 6 more years at 18M per
