Phil Jackson is awesome

[ QUOTE ]
Yahoo.com -
Lakers coach Phil Jackson was reprimanded by the NBA on Wednesday for comments he made following his team's loss one night earlier.

Following a 107-92 loss at San Antonio on Tuesday night, Jackson attempted to explain his team's defense - or lack thereof - in allowing the Spurs to penetrate the lane at will and then pass the ball out for uncontested 3-pointers.

San Antonio connected on 13-of-27 shots from the arc.

"We call this a 'Brokeback Mountain' game, because there's so much penetration and kickouts," Jackson said.

[/ QUOTE ]
Then he apologized for it on ESPN.

Phil don't give a [censored]

Hahaha I don't care what anyone says you are a funny dude, Phil.

Honestly, this whole thing bothered me a little bit. First off, his joke wasnt really that funny. I mean, I get it, but it just isnt that hilarious. That being said, IT IS IN NO WAY OFFENSIVE TO HOMOSEXUALS. At all, not even a little bit. Dont you think that it is a little warped when the president of the Gay and Lesbian alliance or whatever group it is goes into auto-attack dog, offended mode whenever anyone references gays in the media? Isnt that, like, you know, sort of EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH? It seems like these groups, rather than try and get to a point where people dont automatically think something negative whenever they hear the word "gay" would rather flip out whenever they hear the word gay and just make it so no one is allowed to talk about it or make jokes or TREAT HOMOSEXUALITY LIKE EVERY OTHER THING, i.e. fodder for jokes. This wasnt degrading to homosexuals, it wasnt offensive to homosexuals, it wasnt bigoted, it didnt imply homosexuals were inferior or wrong, nothing. It was just loosely ABOUT homosexuals. Just as it was loosely about cowboys and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Honestly, Phil's comment at the end was pretty much perfect, when he talked about apologizing for offending cowboys and Texans and so on. The Governor of Wyoming and the PBR have just as much cause for reaction here.

This is the Al Sharpton-ification of public discourse.

Why is "penetration" only associated with gay sex? The joke doesn't really make sense. Maybe he's trying to say the Lakers are really gay?

I thought it was kinda funny. Got a laugh out of me.

But seriously, there was no harm done here. Hell, Jackson shouldn't have even come close to apologizing. If they can't take a joke, [censored]'em.

In the NBA I watch it's 5 guys playing 5 guys. So if I'd make joke about penetrating a NBA defence made up of 5 guys I think it's pretty obvious why it would be associated with gay sex...

I agree with this, this is pretty much why the joke isnt funny.

But its still not offensive.

I half-agree, yet at the same time it contains probably the most famous sex scene of the last 20 years. So it's understandable why he referenced it.

Where was the 'alliteration'???

At least I think that's what he said in his 'eh, whatever. I have to do this' apology.

I think Phil should have gone with:

There was so much penetration and kickouts that it was like a gangbang at Kobe's house.

I also think it's not funny because, well, he's the billionth person to make a Brokeback Mountain joke.

I'm not really sure how offensive it is, I guess. I'm not sure if I'm really in a position to judge accurately.

Actually, the apology is the funny part. Phil looks deadly serious, and then finishes with apologizing for offending any cowboys or horses, or whatever, which plainly seems like he is mocking the entire episode.

didn't watch the apology, but maybe he meant allusion. I like PJ, but it wouldn't be the first time that his tendency to use 50% more syllables than necessary led him to a confusing place.

agreed completely, although until the very end when he apologized for offending any horses I did actually think he was being serious(so I guess he did a good job then).

come on. You're smarter than that. Special interest groups aren't interested in equality or equal treatment. It's about protection and privileges.

Exactly right. I listened to about 5 different talking heads say things like "Jackson was apologetic afterwards" and "Jackson later admitted his remarks were wrong" or things like that. Did they actually WATCH the "apology?" He says something like "Thank you, ESPN, for making this a big deal and letting me see the error of my ways." And then he apologizes for offending horses and cowboys. This was an ANTI-apology, and it was perfect. Far more hilarious than the original joke, and its especially funny that the morons couldnt tell it wasnt a real apology.

I mean, I'm white and straight and (fairly) reasonable, I should be the target demo for these types of groups, but instead they preach to the choir and grandstand.

I'd like to quote this entire thread for truth.

The initial joke was maybe a generous C- at the time. His subsequent apology and the hysterical reaction from all the dimwits across the country upgrades it to a shiny A+. Bravo, Phil!

Phil Jackson should retire

He's become a very mediocre coach, basically just taking the money and hoping Kobe scores 60 so that the Lakers can win. He then has no reasonable explanation for why the Lakers lose when they lose and reverts to either apparently zenlike nothings, hoping his reputation will confuse the reporters, or ill-considered unfunny jokes like the one he used that night.

The NBA itself is a joke, so I supposed it doesn't matter.

This is not correct. He has had to deal with a slew of injuries to where his only option has been to let Kobe score a bajillion. Two years ago he was criticizing Kobe for this a lot, which led to a couple infamous games where Kobe took no shots and basically let the team try and win. Last year after walton and odom were out he didn't seem to care which was the correct move imo.

you might be referencing a different head gay person than the one whose quote i saw on espn. but on the show, the response was something along the lines of, "phil has been coaching a long time. He shouldn't need to resort to making cheap gay jokes." seemed like just a regular statement to me, as in he/she didn't seem particularly offended but had to make a comment b/c of reporters blowing it up. perhaps in context it was confrontational than i am gathering. as far as what he/she was trying to accomplish, i'm not sure i understand what you mean. i think you mean picking real fights instead of non offensive stupid jokes that aren't funny, but from the language of the quote, i don't think he/she was doing any such thing.
