OT: Poker Reality TV Show Proposal

Hi everyone,

As a recent Rutgers graduate, I recently received an email promotion from TruTV (formerly CourtTV): http://www.trutv.com/pitchtour/. I am going to submit a proposal for a poker-based reality TV show. Ideally, the show, tentatively dubbed "House of Cards" would include 12 somewhat varied contestants (preferably a mix of SSNL, MSNL, HSNL, limit, donkament, etc)
to compete in elimination style episodes for some monetary prize: perhaps something like $100,000 and full buyins to the WSOP or something (obviously, this would not be determined by me).

Anyway, the format would be similar to that of Bravo's reality TV shows: Project Runway, Top Chef, etc, where the first half of the hour episode would be "drama" footage, and the last half hour being some sort of competition to eliminate a person. The competitions would be varied (home game style tournaments, HU tournaments, cash game results - ie, most BB's won in a 10,000 hand period, etc.). Like most of these shows, the winner would receive some sort of extra prize, and the loser would be out (or maybe last two would play HU, something like that would make for exciting TV).

To help market the "viewability" of such a program, I am going to quantitatively analyze relative TV ratings of WPT, Bravo's Celeb poker show, ESPN's WSOP coverage, Poker After Dark, etc. I do think there is a market in this type of programming, and hopefull this can capitalize on poker's popularity.

Anyway, I'm looking for possible contestants. I would assume that one would have to relocate to the East coast, but I'm not completely sure. If you would be interested in being included in my proposal, please PM me, and I'll arrange you to write some sort of profile to be attached to the proposal (the rules specifically ask for one). Obviously, any some of extraordinary personality traits (or reasons why you think you would be good for the show) should be included in the PM. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask me.

EDIT: Mods, please do not delete this. I would've posted this in NVG, but I didn't want busto clowns to flood me with applications. Plus, I feel most at home at MSNL, since 99% of my posts are here.

I think you'll have trouble finding enough unique events. If you find enough I think this would be really funny/awesome.

should really be 40/50 year old home game players trying to play internet poker, would be much funnier.

Re: OT: Poker Reality TV Show Proposal

meh, i think it'd be more tilted not towards comedy, but competition.

try not having any contestants who constantly lament how bad they run.

Re: OT: Poker Reality TV Show Proposal

it would be way too hard to get the aspect of competition over to people that don't understand poker.

would be similar to having a mathcamp reality series tackling derivatives, most people just wouldn't be interested / understand.

you would also need a public figure as a mentor which unless endorsed by would become ridiculously expensive.

lol hellmuth.

price is relative, i think most cable programming have the budget to offer some B level poker player risk-free money to be a host or whatever. im sure DN would do it for free.

I could imagine something like MTV's "The Real Life" with Poker Players. Get a bunch of poker players together in a nice house in Las Vegas. Let them show off the baller-life style.

I see a problem with the fact that you could not show anyone playing on the internet on a US tv show.

I like the idea of the show 'winner' getting WSOP prizes

makes for a follow-up show to the season in the house

good luck

I think the show would be more fun if it was like the Real World as well...kind of like a SIHB reality show, with some poker content intertwined :P

You need hot chicks living at the house for this to be drama filled/successful.

Re: OT: Poker Reality TV Show Proposal

This seems like an awful hard show to sell.

To do this you'd need a good mix of players.

1. Arrogant players (almost all 2+2'ers, easy to find)
2. Bad players for group 1 to make fun of (easy to find)
3. Attractive players so maybe 1 or 2 females somewhere will watch it (probably kind of hard to find if your base is 2+2'ers (sorry guys))
4. Attractive female players for your largest market - guys who think poker is cool but aren't interested in watching a bunch of dudes argue strategy (you'd really just need to hire models and teach them basic poker I think)

also, i think im going to work on some cross-sponsorship deals with stars or tilt.

so that they prize could maybe be something like 50k + one year sponsoring deal (tourney buyins?) or something like that.

i think it would work out for both sides.

Re: OT: Poker Reality TV Show Proposal

ive been tinkering with episode formats in my head. how's this sound? too complicated? the numerals are minutes... for a one hour episode.

0-15: footage of normal happenings within the house; excursions elsewhere.

15-35: sng style tournament; winner gets an extra prize (ipod, gift card, etc). top 3 receive immunity.

35-40: house footage

40-45: "voting." who ever is voted has to play heads up for elimination. however, the person who is picked gets to pick who he or she wants to play against, provided they are not immune.

45-57: heads up sng (format may vary; nlh, lh, omaha, etc... may be decided by a wheel?)

57-60: say goodbye to who got kicked off; everyone else celebrating.

so is this too cheesy?
