The Trip-Hop/Chill/Dream Pop thread
wikipedia article on Trip Hop
I've got a true love for this music and I thought I'd give you guys a quick refresher course on it... Down-Tempo, Chill, Dream Pop...It's called a lot of different things, but Trip Hop was first formed in the early 90s in England out of what was then called The Bristol Sound. It combined American hip-hop with deep groove drum and bass to present a sound that is both dreamy and danceable at the same time. <u>Major Trip Hop and Post-Trip hop artists and albums:</u> Massive Attack - Mezzanine http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P...2.LZZZZZZZ.jpg Long considered the "masterpiece" of the genre, everybody has heard most of these songs - even if you don't recognize the titles! They're constantly used in movies, TV shows and advertisements. Teardrop Angel Inertia Creeps Dissolved Girl Really, you've probably heard the whole album without knowing it! This is a great start in discovering Trip hop. ********************* Portishead - Dummy http://content.answers.com/main/cont...head_dummy.jpg Portishead is probably best known for their huge mid-90s hit, Sour Times (live), but that would be a shame if you stopped there. Dummy is best described as a film noir soundtrack to a movie that was never made. It's absolutely gorgeous and a work you must listen to from beginning to end. It also happens to have the sexiest song ever recorded: Glory Box Wandering Star (live) Roads ************************ Hooverphonic - A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular http://content.answers.com/main/cont...86302237sf.jpg Hooverphonic has at least three or four albums worth discovering, but their first is still, IMO, their best. 2Wicky Inhaler *************************** Zero 7 - Simple Things http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...er_(front).jpg and When it Falls http://www.dance-lyrics.com/ama/when...b0001hahy6.jpg This a British duo who often has guest vocalists on their tracks. Again, you've probably heard one or two of their songs: In The Waiting Line Home (live) Passing By - don't watch the home-made video - it's stupid - just listen to this fabulous song! *********************** Naturally, there's many others who could be labeled Trip Hop or Down-Tempo: Mazzy Star, Tricky, Azure Ray, Bjork, Morcheeba, Thievery Corporation, etc...if there's interest, I'll continue adding more to the thread...or anyone else who wishes to, please do! |
Re: The Trip-Hop/Chill/Dream Pop thread
One of my fav genre's. Hooverphonic rules.
More good ones..... Kruder and Dorfmeister - the reference downtempo disc.... http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...iggy/kandd.jpg Leftfield - classic electronica http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2.../leftfield.jpg Tosca - more goodness from 1/2 of Kruder and Dorfmeister... http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...iggy/Tosca.jpg Loop Guru - shame this band isn't around anymore - hard to describe - I suppose Buddha Bar style chill music with an intense beat. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...y/loopguru.jpg Some Drum and Bass like LTJ Bukem and his Earth Series. - This guy is the best of the best for "intelligent" Drum and Bass and quite frankly Bukem is probably the only listenable Drum and Bass - very chill.... http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...thltjbukem.jpg Now my recs tend more toward chill / electronica but I think Trip Hop by itself is way too limiting. By the way - if you want to listen to the best internet station for this genre - go to www.somafm.com and tune in to the Groove Salad channel. |
Re: The Trip-Hop/Chill/Dream Pop thread
portishead and massive attack are the only ones i'm familiar with but they are both very good. massive attack is good live as well.

Re: The Trip-Hop/Chill/Dream Pop thread
Don't forget Portishead's self-titled second album. People underrate it because it's not as magical as Dummy, but it's no disappointment by any means.
http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/9...headcdarz0.jpg "Humming" is a great song (with a great video), http://youtube.com/watch?v=fzm1DY3hJL8 as is "Cowboys," which is badass live http://youtube.com/watch?v=9HILtyPfMWk Portishead claim to have another album on the way soon, but who knows. --- You mentioned Björk, and I never really thought of her as 'trip-hop,' but I guess one song of hers definitely is, "Possibly Maybe" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Yrd0K9k-Gw |
Re: The Trip-Hop/Chill/Dream Pop thread
Groove Salad is awesome! I always had it on at work...I need to revisit that station...
I had never heard of your selections, so thanks! |
Re: The Trip-Hop/Chill/Dream Pop thread
Can't contribute much to this thread, but:
I love Tricky. Best album is Vulnerable: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...Vulnerable.jpg Although I like just about everything he does. |
Re: The Trip-Hop/Chill/Dream Pop thread
This is a thread I'm going to be following very closely. Every now and then at a swing dance event when the hour gets past 3 am, a DJ will play a song from this genre that really makes me want to groove. I know little about the music here, and there's definitely some I like.

Re: The Trip-Hop/Chill/Dream Pop thread
Ok - I have to put a few more "Electronica" recs on here.
Once again - Mr Dorfmeister's - A Different Drummer Selection - unbelievable downtempo reggae dub dj mix. hard to find already as it's out of print but get it used or from I tunes. (lol - guess it's not that hard to find) http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...gy/drummer.jpg Everything But The Girl - Walking Wounded - This was when they went drum and bass - they were sorta the original Zero 7 if you will. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ingwounded.jpg Their Back to Mine mix is also great - good chill selections from them - I recommend many Back to Mine's - Lamb, Morcheeba http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...backtomine.jpg And one more - Weekend Players - as one review on amazon says... "dreamy electro brit pop" Collaboration between Groove Armada's Andy Cato and left-field jazz/dance singer Rachel Foster - looks like they only made one album but that's not unusual for this genre. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...endplayers.jpg |
Re: The Trip-Hop/Chill/Dream Pop thread
Before we go any further, we have to remember the original.
Paul Oakenfold Both of these are very good: http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...1.LZZZZZZZ.jpg http://panther1.last.fm/coverart/300x300/2603673.jpg |
Re: The Trip-Hop/Chill/Dream Pop thread
Great thread idea.
Tipper is one of my favourit DJ's/producers. His Trip-Hop (which he calls Tip-Hop) is sick. |
Re: The Trip-Hop/Chill/Dream Pop thread
Eh, you really want to get old school, get yo bad self on back to Art of Noise
|
Re: The Trip-Hop/Chill/Dream Pop thread
Good God, is Everything But The Girl still around? A girlfriend I had in the 80's was into them, the lyrics were in French if I remember correctly.

Re: The Trip-Hop/Chill/Dream Pop thread
Air
This is a French duo who create lush sound scapes mostly via Moog synthesizers, Wurlitzer organs and vocoders - which makes it surprisingly easy to replicate their sound live. They have quite a few albums but everyone would agree you should start with the now classic, Moon Safari: http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...1.LZZZZZZZ.jpg Quite a few of these songs have been used in film, TV and ads...so I'm sure you've heard at least a couple of these: All I Need (warning - bad fan video!) La Femme d'Argent Sexy Boy Kelly Watch The Stars Their most popular song is probably the Theme from the movie The Virgin Suicides: Playground Love Great band, fantastic live, too... |
Re: The Trip-Hop/Chill/Dream Pop thread
Junior Boys.
A solid sound-scape that can't be danced to, but works great for the drive home. I don't know their best album, just posted a picture because it seemed like I should. http://lunapark6.com/wp-content/uplo...juniorboys.jpg Ratatat They mix synth with real electric guitars. http://www.scissorkick.com/blog/images/ratatat2.gif |
Re: The Trip-Hop/Chill/Dream Pop thread
Morcheeba
mixing World Music with trip-hoppy beats, Morcheeba has been making great music for over ten years. Their best-known albums are probably: http://www.tunefilter.com/1999/big_calm.jpg and http://funkysouls.com/img/Morcheeba-Charango.jpg They had a world-wide hit with this song: Rome Wasn't Built in a Day Other great songs: The Sea Otherwise Undress Me Now Morcheeba has been a trio up until their latest album, Diver Down, where vocalist Skye Edwards was replaced by numerous other vocalists. It's a change, as the band's sound was closely linked to Edwards, clean, clear singing. I haven't listened to the new album yet, so if anyone has a review, put it here! |
Re: The Trip-Hop/Chill/Dream Pop thread
OK, some takes on some of the songs in here so far.
Massive Attack -- Their music seems like a good example of the genre, but it doesn't really make me want to move. In contrast to, say, Portishead's Glory Box, which features a lot of build up and release, their music stays pretty cool and flat. Nothing wrong with that, but not what I'm looking for here. Portishead -- Glory Box is the main reason why I'm in this thread. Love that song. I hadn't really listened to much of their other stuff, though. Roads was pretty decent. Sour Times I wasn't really familiar with, but I think I might have heard it somewhere. I can't place it, though. That was my second favorite of Dom's links, although its tempo was a little too quick for me to want to spin it at a dance or something. Hooverphonic -- I liked 2Wicky. It doesn't quite grip me like Glory Box, but it's good. I'll consider buying that one. The other track didn't interest me as much for the same reasons as the stuff from Massive Attack. Zero 7 -- I've heard In the Waiting Line before, and it's pretty good. This is another one I might consider picking up. Home was interesting, but not as much music that'd get me dancing. Air -- Playground Love was interesting, but most of their music is again not quite what I'm looking for. |
Re: The Trip-Hop/Chill/Dream Pop thread
To be honest, Wookie, everyone I posted has stuff on youtube. I could post links to the good stuff if you like, but nothing is danceable. I like listening to trance and goth. It is good to chill out to, not groove to.

Re: The Trip-Hop/Chill/Dream Pop thread
I didn't necessarily come in here looking for dance music strictly because of your words, Dom. I've heard stuff that people described as "trip-hop" that really was dance music, including Glory Box, and other songs I never got the names or artists of. It didn't take me long to figure out that the gist of the bulk of this genre wasn't anywhere close to dance, but I figured I'd mine for a few more songs that I liked. I'm reporting back because in many music threads, it seems like no one actually checks out an artist they didn't know and then reports back. I really like to hear it if someone listened to someone new based on my recommendation and then reports back that they like that artist. Even if they didn't like the artist, hey, at least they took the time to listen, you know? You guys have put a lot of effort into these recent music threads, and I figured I'd be at least one guy who takes the time to listen to the music and let you know what I think.

It's always great when someone reports back...what did you think of PJ Harvey in the singer/sognwriter thread? |
This what The KLF is about
The KLF
The seminal art/dance group that never felt comfortable at the top of the charts and were never taken seriously as artists created some of the most exciting dance music of the late '80s and early '90s. The bulk of their output is a poppy sort of proto-trance they labelled stadium house, but they are quite varied. The album most in keeping with this thread is Chill Out: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...r-chillout.jpg This ambient album is just one long beautiful track, rated by Mixmag the 5th greatest "dance" album of all time. Chill Out (part 1). Other parts should come up on the side if you want to hear the rest, but if you enjoy it just find a copy so you can listen to the whole thing at once. If you like this it's a bit of a shame they didn't do anything else quite like it. The most notable of their output was released as singles, but they also put out The White Room album. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...m_cover%29.jpg This is a poppier outing first conceived as a soundtrack to an aborted film. It is still relaxing and soothing, and songs on it serve as testament to Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty's prescient understanding of the potential of electronic music. Some Clips from the album: 3 AM Eternal Last Train to Trancentral (live from the lost continent) Kylie Said to Jason (This was a commercial flop - judge for yourself as I quite like it.) As a bonus clip (not from either album) here is their first #1 hit: Doctorin' the Tardis |
Re: The Trip-Hop/Chill/Dream Pop thread
PJ Harvey! I want to know what he thought of Imogen Heap's live triple dubbing. But I really want his opinion on genitorers.
Seriously, thanks, Wookie. I listen to as much as I can as well. I see that the number count is increasing, so a few links are hopefully being pushed. I also enjoy writing, and writing reviews is a fun art. Here is song I think you may be able to dance to. Southern Sun Just because other people mis-label doesn't mean we don't know our stuff! And Dom, I am highly impressed with PJ. |

Re: The Trip-Hop/Chill/Dream Pop thread
Wow a thread I feel I can contribute to, and with a Belgian band in the first post even to make me feel all proud of my homeland and stuff
Before I add a few albums I just wanted to comment on this. [ QUOTE ] Massive Attack - Mezzanine Long considered the "masterpiece" of the genre... [/ QUOTE ] [nitpick]I don't think you can say this, I've noticed here in North America most ppl are of this opinion maybe because it was simply played the most yet in Europe the choice of defining album was usually between either Blue Lines or Protection although Mezzanine has a ton of fans. Not that this matters though, they're all great. Personally I can't really pick one, the sound between the albums is so very different. [/nitpick] I can also concur on Moon Safari. I had this cd playing in my bedroom for 2 years nonstop, as in it never got turned off, it played for 2 years straight 24/7 until the wife and I moved to another place. And yet I'm still not tired of this album nor of any of the songs. Now to add some not mentioned yet. Some of these are not trip hop in the purest sense, but honestly Massive Attack and Portishead are probably the only "pure" ones. Moloko - Do you like my tight sweater http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/5065/774hd4.jpg The only word that comes to mind to describe Moloko's trip hop is "insane". Moloko - Killa Bunnies (amateur clip and the song is about 1 min longer on the album.) Who can resist with a song title like that and lyrics like: Sniveling little bunny bouncing up and down, Scummy little creatures, Run them out of town, In the tiny tunnels scuffling under ground, Toxic little bunny can always be found, Danger evil rodent, Multiplying every day, Bunny taking over, Get on your knees and pray, Filthy fluffy creatures, Teeth as sharp as knives, The longeared ones are coming, Run run run for your lives, Moloko - Day for Night (Live) (Live performance sadly, sounds 10x better on the album) Moloko - Fun for Me (nice to be reminded how damn sexy Roisin Murphy is) DJ Krush I don't have an album to recommend for this Japanese artist as I only have single songs. He does a decent amount of more regular hip hop stuff but he also has trip hop gems like. DJ Krush - Dig This Vibe Clip has nothing to do with song but is only one out there. Song is 4+min in actual track. DJ Shadow - Endtroducing http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/1...1laa240lu1.jpg While they are not all Trip Hop noone weaves and creates songs like DJ Shadow. Almost every song is 5 to 9 minutes of perfection that tingles every one of your senses. Sometimes I miss the female vocals that are so typical of a lot of trip hop songs but when in the right mood a DJ Shadow song is nirvana. Even these YouTube video's don't really do the songs justice. DJ Shadow - Midnight in a Perfect World DJ Shadow - What Does your Soul Look Like part 4 (only 1 min of it though) Thievery Corporation - Mirror Conspiracy http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/1...mlaa240px4.jpg Again, not every song is trip hop. Thievery Corporation - Lebanese Blonde Thievery Corporation - Indra Ignore the video. That's it for now. Most modern trip hop is mixed with other styles like ambience, trance, D n' B and stuff so it's hard to find pure trip hop albums anymore. Not that this is bad, I quite like some of the newer mixed stuff like Morcheeba etc. Honestly though, you could lock me up for the rest of my life on an island with just the Massive Attack, Portishead and Air discographies and you wouldn't hear me complain, even though I listen to everything from Classic to Hip Hop to Industrial. Oh, and since I'm now somewhat homesick I have to end with one more Hooverphonic song. Hooverphonic - Eden (it sounds hollow on all the vids though ) Did you ever think of me As your best friend Did I ever think of you Im not complaining I never tried to feel I never tried to feel this vibration I never tried to reach I never tried to reach your eden Sorry if this turned out too long :P -Kirg |

awesome, Kirg! please post more! [/ QUOTE ] Ok then! Was kicking myself for forgetting them anyway. Blue Foundation - Sweep of Days http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/2...1laa240ji7.jpg A collaboration between 3 Danish composers, a Japanese DJ and a British MC, Blue Foundation gets named a lot as the one band that comes very close to the original Bristol Sound trip hop. While not as sultry, sexy and raw as Portishead you can definitely hear the abundant Massive Attack influences (having Tricky working on your record sure helps for this). Some people might know "Sweep" from the Miami Vice soundtrack. As usual, disregard the videos, not only are they not the actual clips but they will change how you interpret the music significantly. Blue Foundation - Sweep Blue Foundation - End of the Day Sadly I can't find video's of some of the best songs like "Ricochet" a pure Massive Attack song with Tricky type vocals and "02.17 AM", a great groove song with a fantastic jazzy trumpet. And while I'm at it. Mono - Formica Blues http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/5...klaa240rr5.jpg I can really let the song speak for itself here. Mono - Life in Mono Great sound and fantastic female vocals that always evoke feelings of Parisienne singers and classic French wistful movies. Warning, the rest of the cd is all over the map genre-wise though. Royksopp This is mostly just about one song since they only really have two trip-hop like songs on their second album "The Understanding". But boy oh boy is one of them simply fantastic. Is this even trip hop? I'm not sure, wikipedia says it is, and honestly when you get to any electroniclike music lines can become so murky it's ridiculous. Genres are just useless labels that try and trap artists within a box anyway. (end rant) On to the song. But please please please do not look at the video, minimize it, scroll down, turn your screen off, hell throw your monitor out the window as long as you don't watch. Royksopp - Triumpant You should probably listen to the song before reading further as I don't want to bias the experience. "Triumphant", the perfect title for what you are about to hear as this song is the embodiment of that word. Every time I hear this song I instantly get a movie in my head of a man sitting on a step trying to work out a difficult decision in his head. When the beat starts he gets up and starts walking, the longer the song goes the faster he starts walking until he finally is walking at an elated and happy brisk crisp...triumphant. Some people play "Eye of the Tiger" to get pumped up, I play "Triumphant" For what's it worth " Mogwai's Auto Rock" gives me the exact same emotions and movie in my mind. Oh, right the other trip hoppy type song, it's more Hooverphonic-like really. Royksopp - What Else is There? And now I really should get some sleep since it seems to be almost 6am btw I love these "Genre X" music threads. They always come out so perfectly informative in the Lounge and thanks to the posters here I've found a ton of new music already. So like, thanks and stuff. Happy to give something back. |

Re: The Trip-Hop/Chill/Dream Pop thread
Dom (All),
This thread has some great stuff but I was hoping for something a little different. I don't really think there is a specific genre for what I am thinking of. I'm probably just picking ballads from different artists and thinking there is a "catch-all" sound somewhere. Something more "lazy" and haunting without the backbeat I am hearing in alot of these examples. The Azure Ray "Drinks We Had Last Night" (from female singer/songwriter thread) was a great example of what I am getting at. Mazzy Star's "Fade Into You" and "Into Dust" come to mind Also "Wicked Game" which I know is played out but the sound is representative. Also Julee Cruise: The World Spins (Couldn't find the complete song) Into The Night (Ignore weird video) Questions In A World Of Blue (Give it a sec... the song kicks in) Screw it, I'm kinda all over the place. Sorry for the hijack...I'll keep an eye on this thread and the other one. |

two old school tracks
Sven Väth - L'esperanza The Future Sound of London — Papua New Guinea Also no one mentioned Nightmares on Wax |
Re: The Trip-Hop/Chill/Dream Pop thread
Wookie:
If you want something with the same rhythm as that song: The Harder They Come I would suggest DJ Tiesto as well, but I just counted some of his stuff, and it is with the speed of Oakenfold. I am not huge into Dance. But you may want to check out Madonna's Confession on a Dance Floor. You can even pick it up in Vinyl, and it is a very solid work. sorry hung up Oakenfold remixed Sorry Here is some Tiesto. Maybe he is fast for your tastes. Just Be Rain Down On Me : It takes a minute for it to get to the point. And the Tiesto mix of Southern Sun Tell me if I am getting closer. There is tons of dance music that I have heard that I wish I could find, and tons that I used to own that I no longer have. If you like any of the above, you ought to go ahead and explore some more. Good luck. |

Laika - lush, dreamy female vocals on top of complex, jazzy trip hoppybeats and blips. Band is still around - according to their website - next album is half in the bag.

Thievery Corporation is the best at this sort of thing, IMO. All arists on the ESL label are really damned good. Maybe not trip-hop as much as acid-jazz/lounge music, but it's a sub-set of trip-hop to many.
Thievery Corporation - Richest Man in Babylon and Lebanse Blonde are my two favorites from them. Thunderball and Federico Aubele are other standouts Federico Aubele - Postales Thunderball |
